🙋🏼♂️How can condensation form in the attic space on hot summer days?
Condensation forms when warm, humid air reaches a surface that is colder than its dew point - the temperature at which moisture turns into water droplets.
Even when it is very hot outside, this can happen in an attic because:
- Air conditioning cools the ceiling and attic surfaces, especially around recessed lights, ducts, and poorly insulated areas.
- Humid indoor air leaks upward through ceiling gaps, light fixtures, plumbing pe*******ons, or attic access doors.
- Bathroom or kitchen exhaust fans may vent into the attic instead of outdoors, adding substantial moisture.
- Air-conditioning ducts or equipment may sweat if they are cold, poorly insulated, or leaking.
- The roof deck can cool rapidly at night, allowing moisture that accumulated during the day to condense.
The water can soak insulation, drywall, or ceiling framing and eventually appear as brown or yellow stains. However, a stain during hot weather is not automatically condensation. It may also indicate a roof leak, plumbing leak, or HVAC condensate problem. A stain that worsens after rain usually points more strongly to a roof or flashing issue.
Check whether the affected area is near a bathroom, duct, vent, chimney, roof pe*******on, or air-conditioning equipment. Also verify that all exhaust fans discharge outdoors, attic ventilation is working, and the ceiling air barrier is sealed.
Another reason why proper attic ventilation & insulation is so important!!
