HVAC HEATER TIPS EVERY HOMEOWNER SHOULD KNOW! 🏠🔥

Cooler weather is coming to Southeast Louisiana, and now is the time to make sure your heating system is ready! 🍂

Here are 5 things every homeowner should know about their heater:

🔧 1. CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER.
A dirty filter restricts airflow and can make your system work harder. Check it regularly and replace it as needed.

🌡️ 2. KNOW YOUR HEATING SYSTEM.
Whether your home uses a gas furnace, electric heat strips, or a heat pump, each system has components that need proper inspection and maintenance.

⚡ 3. PAY ATTENTION TO UNUSUAL SMELLS.
A slight dusty smell when turning on your heater for the first time can be normal. However, persistent burning smells, electrical odors, or unusual fumes should never be ignored. If you smell gas, leave the home and contact your gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

💨 4. DON’T IGNORE STRANGE NOISES.
Banging, grinding, squealing, or unusual rattling can indicate a problem that needs professional attention.

🛠️ 5. SCHEDULE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE.
A professional inspection can help identify worn components, check electrical connections and safety controls, and ensure your system is operating properly before temperatures drop.

HVAC MYTHS VS. FACTS ❄️🔧

There’s a lot of HVAC advice floating around out there… but not all of it is true! 👀

🚫 MYTH: “If my A/C is blowing cold air, everything is fine.”

✅ FACT: Your system can still have airflow, refrigerant, electrical, drainage, or efficiency issues even if it’s producing some cold air.

🚫 MYTH: “The lower I set my thermostat, the faster my house will cool.”

✅ FACT: Setting your thermostat extremely low won’t make your A/C cool faster. It can simply make your system run longer and work harder.

🚫 MYTH: “If my A/C is running, it doesn’t need maintenance.”

✅ FACT: Regular maintenance can help catch small problems before they become expensive repairs and keep your system operating efficiently.

🚫 MYTH: “Low refrigerant is normal and just needs to be topped off.”

✅ FACT: Refrigerant is not normally consumed. If levels are low, there may be a leak that needs to be properly diagnosed.

🚫 MYTH: “I only need to change my filter when it looks really dirty.”

✅ FACT: A clogged filter can restrict airflow and make your system work harder. Check your filter regularly and replace it as needed.

💡 The bottom line: Your HVAC system usually gives you warning signs before a major breakdown. Don’t ignore them!

🚨❄️ WHY DO REFRIGERANT LEVELS MATTER?

Your A/C needs the proper amount of refrigerant to absorb heat from your home and keep your system cooling the way it should. When refrigerant is low, your system may have to work harder, cooling performance can suffer, energy costs can increase, and continued operation can put unnecessary strain on the equipment.

⚠️ Signs your system may have a refrigerant issue:
❄️ A/C blowing warm or not cooling properly
💨 Weak or inconsistent cooling
🧊 Ice forming on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil
💰 Higher-than-usual energy bills
🔧 System running constantly

Low refrigerant isn’t something to simply “top off.” If levels are low, there may be a leak that needs to be properly diagnosed and repaired.

💡 HVAC TIP: Don’t Crank the Thermostat Down!

A lot of homeowners think that setting the thermostat from 75° to 65° will make the house cool down faster. ❌ It won’t! Your A/C generally cools at the same rate regardless of how low you set the thermostat. Setting it extremely low can simply make the system run longer than necessary.

Try setting your thermostat to a comfortable temperature and giving your system time to do its job. 🌡️❄️
