The first baby zucchini is starting!
Cucumbers are maturing quickly (with a few ripe ones sitting in the shade beneath a trellis, waiting for a hungry visitor to take them home and enjoy!)
Rainbow Chard and kale are abundant, perfect for your salad, saute or soup pot.
The Concord grapes are plumping up, in preparation for fall goodness.
The first cherry tomatoes are coloring up.
Peppers are setting fruit.
Eggplants have their first blossoms.
Broccoli heads are ready for picking.
Dill is at the perfect stage for your pickling project.
Lemon balm is begging to be added to your morning cup of tea.
And more!!!

With all this rain, the weeds are equally abundant. If you are willing to share 15 minutes or a couple hours to help keep the sidewalk garden at its best, just come and dig in! If you're unsure where to start, message or text me, and I'll offer some guidance.

Anyone need tomato plants? I have extra Roma (paste) and Brandywine (heirloom slicer) plants, grown in 50-cell trays. So you'll get a "plug", as pictured - the plant will not be in a pot. I'd love to have them gone by tomorrow (Saturday). I have at least 30 of each variety. As long as you don't resell them, you can have them for free. Or you're welcome to make a donation towards the sidewalk garden.

**Bring your own box/tray to transport them home.

When we partner together as a community, the possibilities are endless!

A huge thank you to Debbie Miller of Benson, who donated 8 tomato cages with stakes. Scott Thompson (Kayla Thompson) kindly provided transportation today, and they're now all installed and ready for planting in a couple weeks, as weather allows. A group of kids from the community is scheduled to help with transplanting in early May.

Many hands make the workload manageable, even light. If you want to get involved, there is also space for you. Drop me a note!

I am hoping to put more tomato plants into the Sidewalk Garden this year than we've had in previous years. In 2025, ripe tomatoes were quickly and consistently harvested throughout the season, and I imagine demand will be even higher this year. I am looking to use garden funds to buy more heavy-duty tomato cages (like those pictured), as well as T-posts to support them, unless someone has ones they're willing to donate. Do you know of anyone local selling these? And if we can find some, would anyone be able to volunteer a pickup truck to transport them?

Edited to add: we could use as many as 10 more cages, as well as T-posts (6 or 7 ft).

Now is a great time to do the prep work for this year's garden! If you live in Roanoke and want to garden for the first time but need a little help thinking through what might work for your space, don't hesitate to dm me and I'll be happy to brainstorm with you! It's amazing how much food a small space can produce!

There's not much green growing outside quite yet; but beneath the grow lights, things are popping!

Figs, asparagus seedlings, onions, snapdragons, stevia, and snacking peppers.
