WHAT DOES ALL THIS RAIN MEAN FOR MY LAWN?

Generally, rain is GREAT for lawns! The best! So much better than the alternative.

But, if you are a lawn care person, it can mean a few other things as well. Here are some things you can consider:

- your pre-emergent herbicide application is long gone. It’s designed to last until fall planting season…and not beyond. That way, if you have bare spots from a summer drought…we can seed in the fall (which is the best time). Unfortunately, in a rainy year like this one, the pre-emergent efficacy will expire early and that means things like crabgrass can start germinating again. Some of you might be seeing that in your lawns now. The good news is: crabgrass is an annual w**d, and that means it will only last until frost kills it…which won’t be too long now.

- The fertilizer application we are doing now is going to be realizing IMMEDIATE results. Your lawn should be getting very full, and deep green (based on the iron in the application) and should look AMAZING!

- The ground is soft, which means the healthy grass should be able to put out tillers that allow it to spread and thicken. Also, any clients who have aeration scheduled, should get very deep, plugs and great results.

All and all, a season like this one is AMAZING for your lawn!

There are details to worry about…but nothing major (or expensive), and we see that as good news.

Earthscapes lawn clients: now is the time for the following:

1. Call and let us know if you need any seeding work. The pre-emergent herbicides in most products have now worn off, and it’s the PERFECT TIME OF YEAR TO BE SEEDING!

2. Let us know if there is anything going on in your lawn that we should be looking at? We will be starting lawn work in the next week, based on the seasons, rainfall amounts so far in August, and temperatures starting to lower. If you need anything to be given SPECIAL ATTENTION….now is the time to set that up.

3. If you want any planting work done, FALL IS OUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TIME FOR PLANING THINGS!

Building a garden wall in a very old garden. The owner says this is at least the third time it’s been rebuilt. I promised her…this will be the last.

The other versions were dry-stacked after they took out a water feature that was in this spot years ago.

This wall has a spread footer, blocked up to almost ground level. Weep holes to keep pressure from building behind the wall, and stone drainage. We need to go about 8” higher, and it will be done.

This wall should out-last the house.

The garden ornaments in this spot are amazing! I love them!

JUNE…we love it.

Spring is WILD when you are a landscaper. It’s when the phone rings non-stop (you hope), and everything is all happening at the same time. It shouldn’t surprise us (since we have been doing this since 1986), but it always seems catch us a little off guard after the long, cold winter.

JUNE…means settling into the tasks at hand.

We can breathe a little bit. Set schedules. Less “landscape emergencies” and critical timing of products, contracts, and obligations. The lawns stop growing so quickly…and that’s also a help.

If you are working with us this summer, expect to see our happy faces soon. We will be working on your patios, walks, walls, and even landscape plantings in the coming months. It’s the perfect time to do this work, and things don’t get “crazy” again until typically September (and it’s actually not as crazy as spring).

So, all this as a “thank you” to our clients who have been patiently waiting for us to get to your properties. There is a light at the end of the tunnel…and it’s not the train.

Have you ever wondered why Earthscapes doesn’t use these little signs?

After a conversation with a customer today, I thought maybe an explanation of why we do…what we do…was in order.

We used to use these flags like so many other lawn services.
They only really make sense for liquid applications, and of our four main applications: only one is liquid. And we still have one liquid application because we are only recently finding granular products that do a good job on broadleaf w**ds. We hope the chemistry continues to evolve and continues to get safer and safer so that in the future there won’t any reason for these signs or concerns at all.

But in the meantime…

We stopped using these signs for our lawn applications after a series of lawsuits hit the trade magazines based around these signs. Apparently in the 1990’s people were suing law care companies because they believed they had received applications that they didn’t order or want…and they found lawyers to put together lawsuits claiming big damages.

What was actually happening was that people (mostly kids) were picking the flags out of one yard, and sticking them in other yards…because they are kids.

But when they did, the lawn companies had no way of proving that they in fact didn’t treat the yard with the erroneous sign. So, some of the lawsuits were successful, and as a result…we stopped using the signs. No signs, no movement of signs.

It’s also why we still use paper invoices in your door. We figure that’s more “tamper resistant” and still gives you a “heads up” that the application was done.

This system generally works pretty well, but occasionally (like today) a customer did not see the invoice in the door, and she was concerned because her husband cut the grass.

We explained that if the applications doesn’t work, we would be glad to come repeat the application after enough time has passed that we wouldn’t actually stress the lawn with two repeated applications, too close together.

But I want to thank this customer for bringing her concerns to our attention. It’s great when you get an opportunity to talk about things that you take for granted that everyone knows. We always want to do better, and we always want our clients to feel very safe with what we do, and how we treat your yard and this earth.

I hope anyone with any questions at all will always feel free to call and let us have an opportunity to explain why we do things a certain way. We put a lot of thought into all this, and we love talking about it with you.
