🐝 BEE SEPTIC SMART —

❓ Is a septic inspection only necessary when I’m having a problem?

No! A septic or cesspool inspection can be a valuable part of preventative maintenance, especially if you don’t know the condition or history of your system.

For East End homeowners, this can be especially important with older homes, seasonal properties, recently purchased homes, or systems that haven’t been inspected in years.

An inspection can help identify potential problems before they turn into an emergency.

Suffolk County emphasizes proper inspection, maintenance and operation of onsite wastewater systems to help prevent failures and protect groundwater. (Suffolk County Government)

🐝 BEE SEPTIC SMART —

❓ How can I tell if my septic system is handling all the extra guests in my East End home?

More people means more showers, toilet use, laundry, dishes and overall wastewater.

If your home has had a much higher occupancy than normal this summer and fall, pay attention to changes such as:

• Slow drains
• Gurgling toilets or drains
• Unusual sewage odors
• Water backing up
• Wet or unusually soft areas around the system

These can indicate that your septic or cesspool system needs attention.

🐝 Bee Septic Smart: Don’t wait for a backup to find out how your system handled the busy season.

Septic Saturday 🐝

🍂 Fall is here on the East End — but the busy season isn’t over yet!

September and October are some of the busiest months here on Eastern Long Island. Between weekend visitors, seasonal homes, rentals, vineyards, restaurants, and families enjoying one last taste of fall, your septic or cesspool system may still be working harder than you realize.

Before you put your property into “off-season” mode, ask yourself:

🚽 When was the last time your cesspool or septic system was pumped?
💧 Has your system handled more people and more water than usual this year?
🔎 Have you had your system inspected recently?

A little preventative maintenance now can help you avoid an unpleasant surprise later.

🐝 BEE SEPTIC SMART —

❓ Does my septic system need to be pumped before the holiday season?

If your septic tank or cesspool is approaching its normal service interval, fall is a great time to take care of it before the holiday gatherings begin.

Here on the East End of Long Island, September and October are still extremely busy, with seasonal homes, visitors, events and increased household activity. And many seasonal properties remain occupied well into November and December.

A system that is already getting full doesn’t know that Thanksgiving is coming! 🦃

Regular pumping and maintenance can help prevent unpleasant surprises when you have a house full of family and guests.

🚽 SEPTIC SATURDAY: On the East End, Fall Doesn’t Mean the Season Is Over!

Ask anyone who lives or works on Eastern Long Island—September and October are BUSY! 🍂

While other places are winding down for the year, the North Fork and South Fork are still filled with seasonal homeowners, weekend visitors, vacation rentals, weddings, winery events, restaurants, farms, and fall activities.

That means your septic or cesspool system may still be seeing summer-level—or even higher—usage.

So don’t make the mistake of thinking, “It’s fall, everything is slowing down.”

Around here, we’re still pumping, servicing, inspecting, and helping homeowners keep their systems working properly.

If your property has had a particularly busy season, fall is a great time to make sure your septic system is ready for the months ahead.

And after more than 70 years and 3 generations serving the East End, we’ve seen just about every way a septic system can surprise a homeowner. 😉

🌧️ Can Heavy Rain Affect My Cesspool or Septic System?

Fall on the East End can bring some serious rain — and your septic system may notice it before you do. 🌧️

🐝 Bee Septic Smart: Excess groundwater can make it harder for some septic and cesspool systems to properly accept wastewater, particularly when the surrounding soil is already saturated.

After a period of heavy rain, keep an eye out for:

🚨 Wet or unusually soggy areas around the system
🚨 Slow drains or backups
🚨 Unpleasant sewage odors outside
🚨 Standing water where it normally shouldn’t be

And remember — a wet yard doesn’t automatically mean your septic system has failed. There can be several possible causes, which is why it’s important to have the system properly evaluated rather than guessing.

🌧️ If your East End property has experienced unusually heavy rain and your drains aren’t behaving normally, don’t ignore it.

🚽 SEPTIC SATURDAY: Planning a Fall Event? Don’t Forget the Wastewater!

September and October are HUGE months here on Eastern Long Island. 🍂🍷

From vineyard events and weddings to private parties, farm stands, restaurants, festivals, and packed weekend homes, the East End stays busy long after Labor Day.

If you’re hosting an event or operating a property with a septic or cesspool system, increased attendance means increased wastewater.

That doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem—but your system needs to be able to handle the demand.

💡 Our fall tip: Don’t wait until a busy weekend is underway to discover that your septic system can’t keep up.

If your property has unusually high occupancy or you’ve been planning a busy fall season, consider having your septic or cesspool system checked and serviced ahead of time.

And remember: Eastern Long Island has its own unique mix of seasonal homes, rentals, businesses, vineyards, farms, and heavy weekend traffic. Your septic maintenance plan should reflect how your property is actually being used.
