What does solar do in the winter? Part II

When the snow has either slid off or is manually cleared. A day of abundant sunshine at low temperatures can be quite productive.
You see, photovoltaic solar panels do not operate from heat. They produce energy by absorbing photons from the sunlight and creating an electrical potential between the positive and negative circuits within the panel. Heat will actually squelch the voltage thus lowering overall power (Watt) output.
In cold temperatures a solar array will outperform its nameplate rating. Notice the flattened peak in the graph. My inverters are actually maxed out on cold sunny days.
That might sound troubling but it’s by design. Most inverters like mine are rated for 150% array oversizing.

What does solar do in the winter?
If you leave the snow to accumulate, not much!
Sharing this truth might seem detrimental to our business.

Short term; yeah it could be.
Long term; the truth will prevail.

We set expectations and strive to meet expectations. That’s how we have 5 year old clients that we still talk to and they still offer to answer as character references.

A throw-back and an update for this system thats soon wrapping up its fifth year! This was our first installed system, aside from our installations for ourselves and family members.
He was the first client to take a chance on us. We had only one 5 star review from a repair job we had completed.
This 16.8kW array with 14.7kW inverters is still cranking out big numbers through winter with zero maintenance to date.

We’re pleased to share the completion of this project. We elevated the customer ownership experience by allowing him to remotely monitor his system and sell his SRECs from anywhere.
We also replaced his 4.8kW array with a 7.08kW array of bifacial panels. He’s been amazed by the added power ⚡️⚡️output even in cloudy ☁️☁️☁️conditions. In order to facilitate that extra power we DC coupled the array to his 16kWh lithium battery with a MidNite Hawks Bay 120A charge controller.
His existing grid interactive inverter has a manufacturing date of January 2011 so selecting compatible components required extra care.
It’s taken extra time to establish communication due to some technical characteristics of Starlink internet but we ultimately got it all humming in unison.

The new Enphase energy storage system was a pleasure to install for one of our past “solar only” clients.
This upgrade includes (3) 10kWh battery units capable of a combined 168A of peak power.
⚡️💡🔋
This is more than enough power to provide for full home backup for this residence.
Given the data we’ve gathered over the last year. With the 30kWhs of storage. This home could run completely off-grid from March through November. December-February would require some use of the grid depending on sunshine and snow cover.
