If a roofer says to file a claim, should you?

We get asked all the time: is there storm damage on my roof, and should I file a claim? There are pros and cons to filing.

Plenty of roofing companies will get up on your roof and say you have hail damage. Jordan brings 10 years as an adjuster, so he asks to see your policy first. He looks at your deductible and whether you have full replacement cost coverage or actual cash value coverage, then runs a full analysis to see if filing is worth it for the damage you have.

Curious about storm damage or the pros and cons of filing a claim? Give Slade Roofing a call.

What to consider when choosing a roofing contractor

The big question: do you want to be able to reach your contractor a year from now? Five years from now? Fifteen years from now?

Go with a local contractor with very high ratings. Then make sure the warranty on both the materials and the workmanship is held by the manufacturer. Small businesses can go out of business. A manufacturer that has been around for 75 years and holds your warranty means you are taken care of.

Old hail damage vs a hail claim you can actually file

Jordan here with Slade Roofing. A lot of people want to file a hail claim, and plenty of roofers will get on the roof, point at every mark and call it hail. Jordan spent 10 years as an insurance adjuster, and this is how an adjuster sees a roof like this one: it may have been hit by hail at some point, but now it is old hail. Any adjuster or insurance company will call it normal wear and tear and granular loss. You have one year from the date of loss to claim hail damage. After that, it gets written up as old damage.

If your roof looks like this, get a straight answer before you file a claim that will get denied.

The real criteria for a viable roof claim

We inspected a brand new roof with a leak running all the way down to the crawl space. Insurance typically only covers a roof leak when there is a storm created opening, like missing shingles or a tree branch that punctured the roof. Without that, they may still cover the leak itself but not the roof repair. Worth knowing before you file a claim.

What is a membrane roof and is it safe to walk on?

Forrest from Slade Roofing is putting a membrane roof on a small commercial pump house and answering two questions we get all the time.

A membrane roof is a waterproofing system for roofs at 2:12 pitch or less. That is 2 inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run. With that little slope, water does not sheet off the way it should, so the roof needs a continuous waterproof layer instead of shingles.

Common materials are TPO, PVC and a few others. They range from 45 mil to 90 mil thick. We recommend 60 mil to 80 mil depending on the application.

Is it safe to walk on? Yes, but we take precautions. A rock or a nail in your shoe can punch a hole, so we weld an extra layer of material onto the primary membrane to create a walkway.

Her roof literally disintegrated in Pinetop, AZ

Just finished this one in Pinetop. She had a metal roof and went back to shingles. Shingles carry a great leak-proof warranty. Her metal roof was leaking so badly through the exposed fasteners that there was so much rot underneath, pieces of the plywood had literally disintegrated. She is going to rest easy now.

People always ask me this

Forrest here with Slade Roofing, running another roof in Rigby, Idaho. One of the most frequently asked questions we get: are you going to clean my gutters when you are done? These actually look pretty good, but we will absolutely make sure they get cleaned out. We leave them better than we found them.

Project wrapped up for the day, and the rain gutters are cleaner than when we showed up.

Malarkey Vista in Black Oak, installed in Tetonia, Idaho

Back out in Tetonia throwing on Malarkey Vista shingles in the Black Oak color. Gotta love that color. The crew started in the morning and had the whole roof done by around 6pm the same day. Once cleanup is finished and the heat cables go on, this one is complete.

One of the common questions we get before people replace their roof. How long is it going to take? If you have an average to large house, one day will work if there is clear weather and no nightmares awaiting beneath the roof. Make sure to always budget an extra day.

How long will my roof last?

It is the question I get more than any other. The honest answer is that it depends far less on time than on what went on the roof in the first place. If you buy a shingle that is not up to s***f, seven years in Idaho can look like this. Look at the granule loss. If the client had not told me how old this roof was, I would have guessed north of twenty years. Seven is about all you get out of this type of roof here.

Idaho weather is hard on cheap shingles. Sun, hail, freeze and thaw pull the granules off, and once the granules are gone the mat is exposed and the clock runs out fast.

Coming back to change the skylights on a roof in Victor, Idaho.

We finished this roof about a week ago. It needed skylights, but the units that came in were not going to fit the way we wanted them to fit for the customer. Rather than force them, we reordered the right ones and came back out to install them. Four skylights total. The two lower units open up to ambient air. The two at the top are static, or stationary, units.

Top 3 Questions Homeowners Ask Before a Roof Replacement | Rexburg, ID

Every homeowner asks the same three questions before we tear off their roof. Here are the honest answers.

How long does a roof replacement take? With a full crew in summer, we install 35–40 squares in a 12–13 hour day. (One square = 100 sq ft; most homes run 25–40.) Anything larger goes into a second day.

What happens if it rains or snows mid-job? We work slope by slope. One section comes off, underlayment goes down, then we move to the next. Your roof is never left open to the weather.

When is the final bill due? Paid the day the shingles go on gets you our best price.

Installing a metal roof, Part 5 β€” the cleat that locks the next panels down.

Before the next set of panels goes on, a cleat gets set on top of the transition metal β€” tucked under the panel above it and over the one below. The panel folds around that cleat and locks in.

That's what holds a metal roof down in high wind, and what keeps wind-driven rain and snow from getting underneath.

Nobody ever sees it once the roof is finished. More of this install coming.

Installing a metal roof, Part 4 β€” sealing the transition.

Transitions are where metal roofs start leaking. So every part of this one gets sealed: silicone under the laps, the panels tied together, and the water given nowhere to sneak in.

Nobody ever sees this once the roof is finished. It's the reason it lasts.

More of this install coming.
