WPA Studios WPA Studios, PLLC was started in 1993 in Richmond, Virginia. We provide unique architectural and interior design in Richmond and surrounding areas.

Our discipline expertise is in historic renovation, adaptive reuse, new construction, and interior design. Walter Parks Architect, PLLC was started in 1993 in Richmond, Virginia. We provide unique and creative architectural design services to a select group of private individuals and developers. The practice has grown from its origins of a two-person office to its current staff of fifteen. We are

enthusiastic about the projects we work on and have an interest in seeing the City of Richmond’s downtown become a thriving area to live, dine, and shop. Our practice believes that energy efficiency and environmentally friendly design are important components for Architecture today. In recent years the focus has been mixed use renovation projects, such as warehouse buildings made into loft style living with retail and restaurant spaces available. Notable projects include, a new five story building on Broad Street that is integrated with an adjacent Historic Tax Credit Rehabilitation and a twelve story Mixed Use renovation where the rotting 1970’s façade was stripped away and the Historic 1905 Architecture was reconstructed. Although, primarily based in Richmond, projects extend throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Projects range in size from housing for “Neighborhoods in Bloom” to the renovation of entire city blocks.

Last Friday, the team took a trip to Pelagos VR to fight post-apocalyptic zombies and solve puzzles in an ancient underwater temple while sharks swam by and oxygen ran out. We had a blast and, thankfully, made it out alive!

There's nothing like a little adrenaline, problem-solving, and dancing in a virtual elevator to bring a team together. 🦈🧟‍♂️

Last year, we introduced a new name—WPA Studios—to reflect a firm built on collaboration and shared leadership. Today, we're proud to take the next step in that evolution.

Please join us in congratulating Senior Project Managers Sarah McInerney and Sean Wheeler on becoming Partners at WPA Studios, joining Founding Partner Walter Parks in leading the firm.

This milestone recognizes years of dedication to our clients, our team, and the communities we serve. Through their leadership, expertise, and thoughtful approach to design, Sarah and Sean have played an integral role in shaping our practice, and we're excited for the future they'll help lead.

Project Architect Gaelan made the trip to Champaign, IL last month to check in on two of our projects, navigating some wild weather (including tornadoes!) along the way.

First up is 1st & Springfield, a three-story, 30-unit apartment community. Just catty-corner from it is Midtown West, a four-story, 66-unit mixed-use building with commercial space on the ground floor.

Designed for students and young professionals, both projects are part of The University Group's continued investment in revitalizing Midtown, a vibrant district in the heart of Champaign. It's exciting to see these projects taking shape and contributing to the neighborhood's continued growth.

Owner: The University Group
Design Consultant: Kennedy Hutson Associates
Structural Engineer: Speight, Marshall & Francis
Civil Engineer: BKB Engineering
MEP: KEDbluestone (Midtown West) | MJO PLLC (1st & Springfield)
Landscape Architect: Hitchcock Design Group (Midtown West)

Hard to believe it's been 10 years since Courtyard Lofts in Scott's Addition was completed!

We love the variety of textures, colors, and materials in the outdoor courtyards of this 90,000-square-foot complex.

We're excited to be part of this transformative adaptive reuse project, which will convert a former office building into new apartments in the heart of downtown. We look forward to seeing this vision come to life and sharing progress along the way.

Meet Kelly, our resident design chameleon, problem-solver, and steady force behind a wide range of projects at WPA.

A Virginia native, Kelly holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from VCU and a Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech. Since joining WPA in 2007, she has brought a thoughtful, detail-driven approach to projects of every scale and type—old and new, big and small, and everything in between. She especially loves working on local projects that connect design to place and community.

A proud student of the legendary Camden Whitehead (affectionately known as a “Camden-iot”), Kelly has spent nearly two decades helping shape not only our work but also the culture of our office. She values the people she works alongside, the daily laughs, and the variety that comes with every new challenge. Outside the office, Kelly stays busy as a twin mom and PTA president, bringing the same thoughtfulness, ingenuity, and sense of humor to everything she does.
