A closer look at the progress inside the UVA Karsh Institute of Democracy.

With scaffolding throughout the space, crews are working around framing, MEP systems, and the building’s curved architectural elements as construction continues.

Photos like this are a great reminder that a finished space comes together through hundreds of individual pieces, coordinated across many teams and trades. Once complete, the building will serve as a hub for scholarship, teaching, and collaboration around democracy, including a 430-seat auditorium, classrooms, media production space, and collaboration areas.

A new Family Services building is coming to the Henrico Government campus!

Henrico County is partnering with Hourigan and Guernsey Tingle to deliver this new facility, which will provide vital services to families throughout the county. As we prepare for the project, we’re looking to connect with various trades interested in getting involved.

This warehouse is taking shape using tilt-up construction, which involves casting large concrete wall panels horizontally on-site before using a crane to lift them into their final position. Once the panels are cured and ready to go, an entire building perimeter can be raised in just a matter of days.

For large-scale warehouse projects, this approach offers several advantages, including faster installation, reduced transportation requirements, and cost efficiencies compared with traditional off-site precast construction.

What looks like a simple wall going up is actually a carefully coordinated process involving concrete, reinforcing steel, formwork, foundations, and precision crane operations that all come together to create the building’s structure.

Each summer, Hourigan’s regions come together for a day designed for more than just our employees. It’s a chance to bring along the people who matter most, have some fun, and let our teams meet the families they hear so much about.

From Drive Shack in Richmond, to Topgolf in Hampton Roads, to Three Notch’d Brewing Company in Charlottesville, our teams made the most of the summer with plenty of smiles, games, good food, and time together.

Our Mission Critical team recently gathered at River City Roll for their Q3 meeting, starting with business updates, strategic discussions, and planning for the quarter ahead. Once the work was done, the team traded conference tables for bowling lanes to build connections, welcome new team members, and enjoy some well-earned fun together.

It wouldn't be a true team-building event without some friendly competition. Congratulations to our high-score champion, Shawn, and a special shoutout to our "lowest score" winner, Eric, for being a good sport and proudly representing the bedazzled hat. We have a feeling there's already a rematch in the works.

The team's spirit was on full display, and it's a great reminder that building strong teams is just as important as building exceptional projects.

Before a single brick was laid on this building, our teams built a full-scale visual mock-up.

This allows us to evaluate every detail, from brick color and mortar selection to joint consistency, craftsmanship, and overall appearance. It gives the owner, architect, and our trade partners confidence that everyone is aligned before production begins.

Our Preconstruction team recently enjoyed an afternoon together at a local sporting club, taking a break from schedules, estimates, and meetings to spend time as a team.

The relationships we build outside of the office are just as important as the work we do inside it, and we're thankful for opportunities to connect, recharge, and have some fun together.

What a night! Our Trade Partner Open House was our biggest yet, and we're so thankful to everyone who joined us to connect, catch up, and enjoy a great evening together.

We were especially proud to host a raffle benefiting Blood Cancer United and were honored to welcome members of their team throughout the evening. We're incredibly grateful to everyone who donated, and we'd like to give special recognition to our top raffle contributors, featured here.
