A productive growing season begins with soil that moves air and water efficiently.

Agricultural perlite improves the physical structure of field soil, raised bed blends, greenhouse media, and commercial growing mixes. Its porous particles create lasting air space, help excess water drain, and reduce the compaction that can restrict developing roots. Norcal Perlite supplies high quality horticultural perlite for growers who need more consistent soil performance from planting through active crop growth.

Create a stronger foundation for every crop you plant.

Heavy Oregon clay can create two major challenges beneath the surface: water moves slowly, and tightly packed particles leave limited room for oxygen.

Horticultural perlite helps address both problems by adding durable, porous particles that loosen dense soil, improve drainage, and resist compaction over time.

The appropriate perlite grade and application rate will depend on the planting area, crop, and desired drainage level, but a general guideline for clay soil is approximately 10–20% perlite. Used correctly, perlite can help create a more balanced growing environment for gardens, raised beds, commercial plantings, and agricultural soil.

Farms and soil blenders working at scale need an amendment that performs consistently across a range of applications.

Our grade #100 is a medium-coarse, all-purpose horticultural perlite developed for farming, landscaping, nursery production, and large-volume soil blending. Its particle profile helps balance aeration, drainage, and moisture management while keeping growing media lightweight and workable.

For operations preparing beds, custom soil mixes, or future planting areas during August, Grade #100 provides a versatile option for improving root-zone structure.

Preparing for the next production cycle involves more than choosing between horticultural perlite and vermiculite.

Commercial growers also need to identify the right grade, estimate material volume, account for storage and unloading, and coordinate delivery with soil blending or planting schedules.

Our experts work with farms, nurseries, greenhouse operations, hydroponic producers, and soil suppliers across California and the West Coast to help keep bulk growing media orders organized from product selection through arrival.

What happens after irrigation can be just as important as the amount of water applied.

When growing media becomes dense, excess moisture can remain around the roots and limit oxygen movement. Horticultural perlite creates durable pore space throughout soil and potting mixes, helping water move away from the root zone while keeping the medium open and aerated.

This balance supports healthier root development and more dependable growing conditions in farm beds, greenhouse containers, nursery production, and custom horticultural mixes.

Summer hydroponic production requires a growing medium that supports rapid drainage, high oxygen availability, and dependable nutrient movement.

Our grade #4+ horticultural perlite features larger particles and minimal fines, helping reduce the potential for clogging while maintaining an open root zone. Because expanded perlite is lightweight, sterile, and inert, it can be used in standalone perlite systems or blended with coco, peat, and other soilless substrates for drip irrigation, drain-to-waste, and controlled fertigation programs.

August is not only a month for maintaining current crops, but it's also an important time to prepare seedlings and transplants for upcoming production cycles.

Medium-grade horticultural vermiculite is designed to support small pots and delicate plants by maintaining moisture and air space within the growing medium. Its lightweight structure helps keep water and nutrients available near young roots, making it valuable for greenhouse propagation, nursery transplanting, vegetable starts, rooted cuttings, and fall crop preparation.

Soil may look healthy from above while compaction and excess moisture are limiting growth below the surface.

Horticultural perlite helps improve the physical structure of growing media by adding lightweight, porous particles that resist settling and preserve air space around roots. These pathways support more efficient drainage, greater oxygen availability, and a healthier balance between moisture retention and water movement.

Selecting the right perlite grade also allows growers to tailor drainage performance for seedlings, potting mixes, raised beds, greenhouse crops, and commercial production systems.

Successful August irrigation depends on more than the amount of water applied.

It also depends on how that water moves through the planting zone. Field growers incorporate horticultural perlite into beds and rows to loosen tight soil profiles, increase porosity, and help water move more evenly instead of pooling near the surface or running away from the crop. The resulting soil structure can provide developing roots with better access to both air and moisture.

Bulk horticultural perlite is well suited for vegetable production, berries, vineyards, specialty crops, and other high-value agricultural plantings.
