Buried beneath Shockoe Bottom for more than a century, the remains of Lumpkin’s Slave Jail mark a site where thousands of enslaved people were confined at the height of Richmond’s domestic slave trade. As part of The Shockoe Project, this hidden history will be brought back into public view.

Drawing from Richmond's historic fabric and West African cultural traditions through material, pattern, and form, the Lumpkins Slave Jail Pavilion will shelter the archaeological remains of the jail while guiding visitors from darkness to light, hidden to revealed.

Anchored by a c. 1940s two-story warehouse—protected as a historic asset by the Old Georgetown Board— citizenM Washington DC Georgetown utilizes adaptive reuse to bridge a design dialogue across decades.

Five new stories rise above the historic masonry façade. Because the structure was retained, lower-level guestrooms align directly with original windows, framing views of the adjacent green space and Potomac River through historic steel-mullioned openings.

What does it mean to design an engagement with history? For architects, the answer may begin with massing or material. For experience designers, it may start with artifacts, media, and interpretation. For historians and civic leaders, it may hinge on memory and public perception.

This , we're giving a nod (and a head scratch) to the four-legged muse behind Daisy's at Tredegar 🐶 Named after the building’s resident retriever, the café acts as an extension of its locale: just as Richmond’s riverfront is a haven for dog walkers, Daisy's was designed as a welcoming landing for the folks on the other end of the leash.

The TB Smith Community Center has received a 2026 AIA Virginia Honorable Mention for Contextual Design, recognizing the way its architecture responds to the residential context of Richmond’s South Side. From its neighborhood-scaled gables to a program informed by community voices, the center was shaped to feel at home in the neighborhood while serving a vital civic role.

This recognition reflects a deeply collaborative effort alongside Richmond VA Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and the many partners who helped bring the center to life.

As the first building to break ground in Richmond’s new Diamond District, Dōma introduces a six-story community with 276 residences centered on the concept of urban serenity.

Guided by LEED and WELL principles, the design integrates evidence-based strategies across the architecture, interiors, and landscape—from biophilic arrival spaces and intimate coworking areas to wellness-focused amenities. The building’s stepped form opens views toward the emerging district, while balconies add depth and a sense of daily life to the façade. At its center, a landscaped courtyard offers a quieter retreat within the energy of the city.

Dōma emerges from the collaborative effort among Thalhimer, Baskervill, Kimley-Horn, Waterstreet Studio, EM Structural, CMTA, SouthState Bank, and KBS, Inc. as the broader vision for the Diamond District continues to take shape.

At William & Mary's Integrated Science Center 4, discovery is on full display. Glass-front labs line key circulation routes, offering direct views into active research, while the 150-seat lecture hall is wrapped in a veil of vertical wood slats that filter in light and movement. These moments of transparency quietly work to dissolve traditional boundaries and recast research and learning as a shared experience embedded in the daily life of the building.

For their collaborative summer project, Baskervill’s architecture, interior design, and MEP engineering interns worked side-by-side with expert mentors to transform a complex site into a conceptual university arts building.

Designing to LEED Silver parameters, the team focused on site-specific solutions—boosting natural daylight, streamlining access, and embedding smart building systems into a flexible layout. The resulting proposal seamlessly pairs heritage with high performance to support creativity, learning, and comfort for students, faculty, and the surrounding community.
