Quick thermostat check: For everyday cooling, is your fan set to AUTO, ON, or are you not sure?

AUTO runs the blower with the cooling cycle. ON keeps the fan running continuously. Carrier recommends AUTO for routine cooling because the blower runs when cooling is active instead of operating continuously. Some homes use other settings for specific airflow or indoor-air-quality equipment, so the right setup can depend on the system.

The call started with a simple report: “The pipe is frozen.”

The evaporator coil was heavily iced over, so our technician put the system in heat to thaw it safely. Once the ice cleared, diagnosis found a refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil, and the damaged coil could not be repaired.

With the equipment's age and the severity of the failure, the customer chose the stronger long-term solution: a complete Bryant 3-ton heat-pump and air-handler replacement.

The thermostat was not reaching setpoint, and the system was not blowing cold air.

Our after-hours diagnosis found buildup across the evaporator coil, condenser coil, and blower wheel, plus an incorrectly sized filter. After removing a sheet of pet hair from the evaporator coil, we returned during normal hours and confirmed that the coil remained heavily compacted.

With the equipment in poor condition and no warranty protection, replacement was the wiser long-term investment. We installed a complete new comfort system and made the ductwork modifications needed for a proper fit.
