For centuries, China has produced some of the world’s finest crafts and rugs are no exception to this legacy.

Traditionally, with designs dating back to the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 AD), Chinese rugs are some of the most striking and visually distinguished rugs in the world. With thick carved pile and coming in a variety of colors, they often contain symbolic motifs pulling from Taoism, Buddhism, and nature.

Known for their open body style and vibrant colors, Peking rugs contrast the traditional Chinese style of rug. Utilizing a finer style of weaving, these rugs typically have a shorter pile as well as moving motifs from the center of the rugs to the corners and borders.

Originally designed by American entrepreneur, Walter Nichols, Nichols rugs played a key role in the global Art Deco movement of the 1920s. Combining western compositions with traditional Chinese motifs, Nichols rugs often featured bright jewel tones, striking gradients and high impact botanical scenery.
