Three details from Mountain Modern we're still thinking about.

First, the table. A live-edge slab runs right off the end of the island, so everyday meals happen in the middle of the kitchen without needing a separate breakfast nook.

Second, the drawer you'd never notice: deep, peg-organized, and holding the family's dishes at exactly counter height. No more reaching overhead for heavy stacks. Just pull, grab, done.

Third, the archway. It frames the living room beyond and softens all the straight lines a kitchen naturally carries.

Each of these came from decisions made early, around how this family actually cooks, eats, and moves. That's where the character of a project usually lives: in the details you use every day without thinking.

Which of the three would you steal for your own home?

Nobody thinks about the view from the sink until they're standing at it every night.

In this Richmond kitchen, that view was designed on purpose. The sink sits in the island facing the room, so dishes happen in the middle of homework, conversation, and whatever's on in the next room. All around it, warm veined stone runs across the counters and up the backsplash, so even the hardest-working corners of the kitchen have something worth looking at.

That's the quiet test of a good kitchen: what it feels like during the fifteen minutes after dinner.

The everyday view matters. If yours could be better, we'd love to help.

A small bathroom can't hide a single decision. That's what makes them fun.

This 1940s bath needed to get honest about its age, in the best way. So every choice leaned into the era: a wall-mounted farmhouse sink with exposed brass plumbing, sage green beadboard, and a penny tile floor laid with a snowflake medallion you'd swear has been there for eighty years. The stained glass window? Original, and going nowhere.

Nothing in this room is oversized or over-designed. It's just a handful of well-chosen details doing exactly what the house asked for.

Proof that the smallest room in the house can still be somebody's favorite.

If you have a small space with big potential, we'd love to help you make the most of it.

The goal, in our clients' words: stop feeling like every room was its own little box.

Their Henrico home had the space. It just kept it divided. Cooking meant leaving the conversation. Dinner meant leaving the kitchen. So the plan for this first-floor addition and reworking was simple to say and careful to execute: open the sightlines from the front room all the way through.

Now the kitchen island flows straight into the dining table, the brick fireplace anchors a living area you can see from the stove, and the whole floor reads as one connected space with distinct places to land.

The quieter win: nobody gets left out of the room anymore.

If your home keeps you in separate boxes, we'd love to help you rethink the walls between them.

Then: a three-car garage. Now: the spot where everyone wants to spend the weekend.

These Manakin-Sabot homeowners had a garage doing exactly one job and a backyard pool with nowhere comfortable to land. Together, we built up: a full second story over the garage, with a stone faรงade and wood doors that make the whole structure feel like it was part of the original plan.

Upstairs, there's now a bright lounge with a navy kitchenette, a full bath, and a deck that looks straight over the pool. Guests have a place to stay, swimmers have a place to dry off, and the family has a clubhouse thirty steps from the back door.

The smartest square footage is sometimes sitting right on top of what you already own.

Wondering what your property could hold? That's a conversation worth having early.

The best storage works quietly, making the clutter disappear.

This upper-level suite is full of it. The sloped ceilings that usually become wasted space? They hold floating shelves and a tucked-in beverage bar. The closet is the real showpiece: a full wall system with a place for everything, so getting dressed doesn't start with a search. Even the office and powder room carry their own built-in storage, sized to what actually needs to live there.

None of it shouts for attention. That's the point. When storage is planned into the architecture from the start, the whole floor feels calmer.

If your home has more stuff than places to put it, the answer might not be more space, just smarter space. We'd love to help you find it.

Material choices do more than look good. They decide how a room ages.

In this Tuckahoe kitchen, the choice that shaped everything was soapstone. It's a material with history: soft to the touch, naturally darkening over time, developing character with every year of use. Against the warm gray cabinetry and vertical paneling, it gives a brand-new kitchen the settled feeling of a much older one. Behind the range, a full slab turns the hardest-working wall in the house into the most striking.

And in the dining room next door, the original ceiling medallion stayed right where it's always been, with a new brass light hanging from old plaster.

That's the balance we're always after: materials that work hard now and look even better later.

What material would you build your kitchen around?

One photo, one renovation lesson: pay attention to where the cook gets to look.

In this Chesterfield kitchen, the island faces outward, toward the seating, the fireplace room, and the windows beyond. That placement was deliberate. It keeps whoever is cooking inside the conversation. The walnut island base and simple pendants let the kitchen read as furniture, so it belongs to the living space around it.

When we plan a kitchen, sightlines get as much attention as storage. A beautiful room you feel isolated in is still a miss.

Next time you're standing at your own sink or stove, notice what you're facing. If the answer is "a wall," we should talk.

This sunroom used to be a screened porch. It was a nice spot in the right weather, but for most of the year, it sat empty.

Our clients wanted a space they could actually use year-round. Somewhere to unwind on a weekday evening, host friends on the weekend, or just sit with coffee and watch the backyard change seasons.

We helped reimagine the porch as a true four-season room. The screens were replaced with black-framed windows and doors. The fireplace anchors the space with birch gas logs for cooler nights. A rough-hewn mantel in midnight black adds weight without competing with the stone. A wood plank ceiling adds warmth overhead, grounding the room in natural texture and character.

Every detail was chosen with intention. Light sconces frame original artwork on either side of the fireplace. A woven chandelier adds texture overhead. Custom boot benches tuck storage into the corners without wasting a single inch. And grey tile runs the full floor, grounding everything in a palette that feels natural and lasting.

Now, this family has a room that works the way they live. A place to gather, to rest, and to stay connected to the outdoors without giving up comfort.

If you're thinking through what's possible in your own home, we'd love to help guide the process.

Same footprint. Completely different experience.

This Midlothian kitchen needed to work harder and feel like it belonged to the rest of the home. Together with our clients, we rethought the space from the same four walls: white cabinetry to keep it bright, a navy island for prep and gathering, a professional range set against herringbone tile, and glass-front uppers that lend the room some polish.

Our favorite move might be the smallest one: a built-in desk nook tucked under the stairs, wrapped in the same navy and trellis wallpaper, so the household command center finally has a home of its own.

If your kitchen has good bones but the wrong layout, that's exactly the kind of puzzle we like solving.
