PART 5 - Charm & Challenges

The primary challenge in renovating this home involves balancing the inherent charm of a structure built by a carpenter in the 1970s with the need to update the space for modern usability. Specific challenges mentioned include:

• Restricted Layout: The foyer is currently closed off by an "old garden platform" and a wall that must be removed to open up the area.

• Poor Initial Lighting and Access: Key areas, such as the current window overlooking a carport, lack functionality and must be converted into an entry door.

• Architectural Consistency: Ensuring new additions, such as large bay windows in the kitchen and dining area, match the home's existing aesthetic of abundant natural light while creating balanced architectural value.

PART 4: How to do Mid-Century Modern

Modernizing a mid-century home? It’s all about balance. Keep the character - those vaulted ceilings, bold angles, and unique lines - while rethinking the layout to make everyday living feel more functional and open.

Layer in natural materials, subtle geometric patterns, and earthy tones that connect indoors with out. Then finish it off with a few updated touches (think a freestanding tub or elevated fixtures) to bring in that modern comfort without losing the home’s original charm.

PART 3: The Real Deal

One of the coolest details in this home is hidden right in plain sight—the roof structure. What you’re seeing isn’t decorative; that exposed ridge beam is the real deal, running nearly 40 feet the full length of the house. Even more impressive, it’s a double ridge beam system supporting the rafters, built with authentic rough-cut timber. This kind of craftsmanship, especially from the 1970s, is something you just don’t see much anymore - today, it’s often replicated with faux beams, but this is the original thing.

Part 2 - Quick update on the house—lots happening! Our Pawject Manager is leading the way!

The old mechanical closet is being turned into a walk-in pantry by pushing out the exterior wall. It’ll be hidden behind cabinet-style doors, which is a really cool touch.
New flooring is going in throughout, including the primary bedroom, and the sunken living room is getting a refresh too.

We’re also building out the new primary bathroom where the office used to be - opened it up to create a much better layout.

Design-wise, we’re keeping it natural and earthy with wood-look tile in the shower and black accents on the floors.
