Congratulations, Malcolm!

In just six months with Petri Electric, Malcolm has already made a strong impression through his hard work, attention to detail, and willingness to help others succeed. Inspired by his grandfather, an electrical engineer, Malcolm has dreamed of becoming an electrician from a young age, and he's turning that dream into reality every day.

Malcolm has contributed to projects including Texas Instruments in Richardson and Sherman and The Star in Frisco, where he's become known for his pipe bending skills and for taking the time to teach newer apprentices. He believes that quality work starts with doing the job right the first time and making sure everyone on the crew is set up for success.

When asked what advice he'd give someone entering the trade, his answer was simple:
"Ask as many questions as you can!" đź’ˇ

Looking ahead, Malcolm hopes to continue growing with Petri and one day become a Project Manager. We're proud to have him on our team and appreciate the positive attitude and dedication he brings to every job.

Keep up the great work—we're excited to see what the future holds! 👏⚡

Safety Matters
Q2, 2026 Article by Greg Jarchow, Vice President, Finance, Accounting, HR, and Insurance

In construction, every decision has a price tag attached to it. We track labor hours, material costs, equipment utilization, and project schedules down to the penny. Yet one of the biggest cost drivers on any project often goes unnoticed until it is too late: SAFETY. The reality is simple — safe projects go hand-in-hand to creating profitable projects. When crews work safely, jobs stay on schedule, productivity stays high, and customers gain confidence in the company delivering the work. Simply put, when safety gets ignored, the budget and project suffer.

The financial impact of workplace injuries is staggering. According to the National Safety Council, workplace injuries cost U.S. businesses approximately $181.4 billion in 2024 alone, with the average medically consulted injury costing roughly $48,000. In construction specifically, the “Fatal Four” hazards — falls, struck-by incidents, electrocutions, and caught-in/between accidents (when a worker is crushed, pinned, or trapped between equipment, materials, or structures) — account for roughly 65% of construction fatalities. But the true cost of an accident goes far beyond medical bills or insurance claims. One injury can mean overtime for replacement workers, delayed schedules, damaged equipment, lower morale, increased insurance premiums, administrative investigations, and sometimes lost customers. OSHA estimates that indirect costs can be four to five times greater than the direct costs of an incident. There is an old saying in construction: “If you think safety is expensive, try an accident.” Most superintendents would agree that paperwork for a safety meeting is far less painful than paperwork after someone is seriously injured on the job with an OSHA investigation.

Real-world examples prove that safety and profitability go hand in hand. Companies with strong safety cultures consistently report lower workers’ compensation costs, fewer delays, and improved employee retention. Insurance providers often reward safer contractors with lower premiums and stronger bonding capacity, which can help win future work. On the other hand, a single OSHA violation or serious injury can shut down portions of a project, damage client relationships, and impact future bids. In 2024 alone, OSHA assessed over $127 million in penalties, with fall protection remaining the most frequently cited violation for the fourteenth consecutive year. A ten-minute safety check before starting work may feel inconvenient, but it is far cheaper than explaining to a customer why their project is behind schedule because someone forgot to “tie-off” properly.

At the end of the day, safety is not separate from cost management — it is cost management. Every employee, whether in the office or in the field, has an impact on both. Safe work protects people first, but it also protects schedules, budgets, equipment, customer relationships, company reputation, and the bottom line. The companies that succeed long-term are usually not the ones that cut the most corners; they are the ones that understand safety is an investment with measurable returns. After all, no Superintendent has ever begun a toolbox talk proudly proclaiming, “Good news everyone — we saved thousands of dollars on PPE & safety training AND only had an increase of fourteen OSHA recordable injuries.”

For Zach Watkins, joining PETRI Electric wasn't just a new job—it was a complete career change.

Before entering the electrical trade, Zach spent 11 years serving in the U.S. Army, where he was mentored by leaders who instilled discipline, accountability, and a commitment to excellence. When he decided to pursue a new path, PETRI Electric gave him the opportunity to prove himself—and he hasn't looked back.

What stands out most is Zach's perspective:

"I don't take this lightly. This company took me in after a career change of 11 years and gave me the opportunity to prove myself. I'm not here to collect a check—I want to be great at this job and help contribute to this company and its reputation."*

Today, Zach brings that same military mindset to every project. As a husband, father, full-time student, and apprentice, he balances multiple responsibilities while continuing to grow his skills and pursue his goals in the electrical industry.

His dedication to safety, teamwork, continuous improvement, and doing the job right reflects the values that make our teams successful.

Congratulations, Zach, on being named PETRI Electric's Apprentice of the Month. We're grateful for your service, proud of your accomplishments, and excited to see what the future holds as you continue to grow with the company.

His values—education, respect, and drive—guide his work every day. Whether he's sharing safety knowledge with younger teammates, leading by example in the field, or continuously seeking opportunities to learn and grow, Shane embodies the qualities that make our workforce stronger.

When asked what advice he would give someone entering the electrical trade, Shane shared:
*"Stay hungry and don't let the opinions or negativity of others dictate the veracity with which you attack each day."*

Outside of work, Shane enjoys disc golf, duck hunting, and spending quality time with his family.

Thank you, Shane, for your dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence. We're proud to have you on the Petri team and look forward to seeing your continued growth and success!

APPRENTICE OF THE MONTH SPOTLIGHT: DONELL TYLER
Join us in giving a big shoutout to Donell Tyler, one of our hardworking apprentices in the Service Department at Petri Electric!
Donell has been with our Service Department for about 10 months, where he’s been building his skills through hands-on experience and real-world problem solving. His interest in the trade started when he was inspired by a childhood friend who encouraged him to look into becoming an electrician—and that passion has only grown stronger.
What Daniel enjoys most about the job is troubleshooting, staying busy, and working with a team that supports each other and gets the job done right.
A few insights from Donell:
He takes pride in staying focused, continuing to learn, and putting in the effort every day to improve. Whether it’s learning new techniques or taking on challenges in the field, he’s all about growth and consistency.
Advice from Donell:
“Stay consistent, work hard, and don’t give up—even when it gets tough.”

Donell shared that one of the biggest things he’s learned so far is the importance of being adaptable and committed. Every day brings something new, and staying open to learning is key to success in this trade.
Outside of work, Donell enjoys watching sports, and spending time with family.
We’re proud to have driven team members like Donell representing the future of Petri Electric!
Drop a 👍 to show him some support!

Embrace Trials – Keep the Faith – Don’t Give Up
At Petri Electric, we are not defined by the work we are given. We are defined by how we rise to meet the challenge.

Embrace Trials
Challenges are not obstacles to our success. They are the path to it.
Every day our industry brings complexity: shifting schedules, unpredictable weather, imperfect plans, code challenges, incompetence of others, and the realities of working with people. These are not setbacks, they are opportunities to lead, to solve, and to grow.
When problems arise, don’t step back. Step forward! Run toward them with purpose and confidence. Every challenge you face is a chance to prove who you are and what you’re capable of.
Keep the Faith
Great work requires belief. Belief in yourself, in your team, and in the mission we share.
When you approach a challenge with faith, you bring clarity where there is confusion and momentum where there is uncertainty. That belief fuels the confidence needed to move forward and deliver results.
Trust the process. Trust your experience. Trust that the effort you put in today is building something greater.

Don’t Give Up
The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is simple: they keep going.
There will be moments when progress is slow and solutions aren’t obvious. In those moments, perseverance matters most. Stay focused. Stay disciplined. Stay committed to the outcome.
Because on the other side of every challenge is growth.
You will be stronger. You will be sharper. You will be more prepared for the next opportunity to lead and succeed.
This principle of Embrace Trials - Keep the Faith - Never Give Up is not a new idea. I learned it from the Book of James, in the New Testament of the Bible.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4 (NIV)
