Silver Lane involved a complete reimagining of an existing home, with multiple additions and a major restructuring of the interior to open walls, connect spaces, and create a more unified whole.

The design developed collaboratively from the beginning — with our artist clients bringing their own ideas and instincts to the process, alongside the AOB team, including Cooper Hall, who had a significant hand in the design work.

At the center of the home is a custom masonry heater, warming the living room on one side and the kitchen on the other, where it incorporates its own baking oven. It was designed with the intention to gather around it.

Inside, hand-finished plaster and curved walls soften the space with organic texture and light. Outside, we set an old-world Eastern European inspired finish against contemporary vertical shou sugi ban siding — two materials and eras in conversation. More on that in a future post.
We chose two types of flooring, wide-plank pine and microcrete, which provide character and contrast as you move through the home.

Organic arches meet clean contemporary lines, while old-world craft meets open, contemporary space.

Within that balance, the home’s neutral palette allows for bold color choices in the kitchen and selected artwork, because both the design and the clients’ vision can hold it..

Last week, the new frame was craned into place atop the restored brick tower—bringing one of the building’s most recognizable features back to life..
