All kinds of windows have their downsides but most people dont know the difference.
There’s essentially 4 main materials that windows are made out of.
Vinyl (plastic) $800 to $2800 per window installed
-Positives: Won’t Rot, No need to paint, and they’re cheap. But there’s a reason they’re so cheap… still on average around $2k installed
-Negatives: extremely high seal failure rate. Roughly 90% over 10 years. Plastic windows weren’t designed to be in the Midwest climates. When we have really hot summers and really cold winter it causes them to expand and contract more that any other window material out there.
Wood $4k-$6k per window installed
-Positives: Beautiful, Custom colors and designs availible and are fairly efficient
-Negatives: Price (average over $5k per window) they rot and termites can eat them. Mold can grow
Aluminum Clad - Cost $3.5k - $5k per window installed
-Positives: Beautiful, Custom colors and designs availible and are fairly efficient
-Negatives: ROT. These were in a class action lawsuit for rotting so quickly. The aluminum on the outside of the wood traps moisture behind it causing Mold and Rot on average within 10 years.
Wood Composite: $2800-$4k per window installed
-Positives: Beautiful, Custom colors and designs availible and are rated the most efficient. Will never rot and are impervious to insects like termites.
Doesn’t need constant maintenance as it’s guaranteed to never fade or crack for 20 years. Only offered by Renewal by Andersen so no fake knockoffs
-negatives: Not paintable and not as cheap as plastic
