Scott Coatings We are a creative group of people intent on bringing a fresh perspective to construction. Once having five employees, we now have many times that number.

Originating in a garage in 2003, Scott Coatings has grown to become one of the preeminent commercial painting contractors in the Seattle area. And once having focused only on architectural paintings, we now tackle everything from fabric panels to FRP to wall covering and beyond. If you have an architectural product for walls, chances are we can install it. How have we gotten here? We did so by continuously providing an opportunity for individuality to color our team and drive innovation. And we don’t plan on stopping.

Construction Inclusion Week means something a little different to us.

The painting trade has always had strong minority representation.

And that's not something we take for granted.

It's shaped how we think, how we work, and how we've gotten better over the years.

When your team comes from different backgrounds, you stop doing things "the way they've always been done" just because that's the habit.

You question it.

You find a better way.

And that's not a small thing in an industry that's still figuring out how to grow.

Scott Coatings has a diverse group of people, and that's reflected in how we approach our work each day.

And Construction Inclusion Week is about acknowledging how far the industry has come and being real about how far it still has to go.

We're glad this week exists.

And we're glad our team looks the way it does.

Juan Lopez is the kind of leader Scott Coatings is grateful to have.

Why?

He would give a co-worker a ride home from work.

Even when it meant an hour and a half out of his evening, because he remembered what it was like to need the ride.

He steps in when a team member needs help.

He teaches patiently and has helped more than one apprentice grow into a foreman.

And that kind of leadership is easy to miss if you’re not paying attention to it.

But it sets the standard for the people coming up behind you.

Three team members are hitting work anniversaries this month:

Amado Dominguez Alvarez is at 3 years.

Dorian Contreras Bran and Ma Del Rocio Waters are each wrapping up their first year.

A work anniversary is a chance to reflect on everything that has gone into that time.

It's hundreds of hours on site, across different projects, different conditions, and different teammates.

And along the way, you start to recognize things you've never been formally taught.

You know when something isn't right before anyone says a word.

You know how a day is going to go by how the first hour runs.

That kind of read comes from putting in the work.

And Amado, Dorian, and Rocio are all proof of that.

Secondary containment coatings fail because they're chosen without understanding what they’re protecting.

Most facilities think a berm or sump is enough.

Then they spec the coating later without understanding what chemicals it'll likely face.

The coating has to hold up against chemical exposure, UV, thermal cycling, and hydrostatic pressure.

And sometimes all of these at once.

If it wasn't matched to the chemicals stored in that area, or if the surface wasn't prepped correctly, it breaks down.

When it fails, you're looking at regulatory violations and an environmental liability.

And worse, a facility that may have to shut down the area until it's remediated.

The coating is usually a small budget line item, which is why it gets overlooked.

But the consequences of getting it wrong are not small.

So when Scott Coatings takes on secondary containment work, the first questions aren't about color or finish.

They're about what's being stored, what compliance requirements the facility faces, and what conditions that coating will actually see in service.

Because the application comes last, after you understand the stakes.

Last year we finished painting John Rogers Elementary in Seattle with Lydig Construction.

It's an 82,000-square-foot school built to support 500 K-5 students.

We knew what this project would become while we were working through it, but knowing that kids are walking into those classrooms right now - that’s real.

Every hallway, every classroom, every wall the field team painted will become a part of these kids’ childhoods.

We're grateful to Lydig for their trust in our team for this project.

It was the kind of project you don't take for granted, especially at the start of the 2026 school year.

Labor Day means something different when you work in the trades.

It's not just a long weekend.

It's a day that was fought for by the same kind of people who show up before dawn and don't leave until the work is right.

The eight-hour workday and the weekend itself weren't given to workers.

They were fought for by people in the trades who said enough was enough.

That history doesn't come up much anymore, but it should.

Because the people who build the things everyone else walks into every day are still the ones doing work that doesn't stop when it's hot, or cold, or when the schedule slips.

Our field team earns that rest.

So today, we're not talking about projects.

We're thinking about the trades who clock in before most people wake up and take pride in what they leave behind.

Chasing revenue used to be the whole goal.

But we've been honest with ourselves about that over the years.

Because at some point, we stopped asking how much work we could take on and started asking what kind of company we wanted to build.

What success looks like for us now is someone starting as an apprentice, learning the trade the right way, earning their journeyman hours, and eventually running a crew as a foreman or superintendent, all within Scott Coatings.

But that path doesn't happen by accident.

It takes defined roles, honest conversations about where someone is versus where they want to be, and training that doesn't stop when an apprenticeship ends.

There are companies in the trades that will tell you they care about developing people.

But fewer of them have actually mapped out what that looks like from day one to year ten.

We're working on getting that right.

Because the goal is to build a place where people can build a career.

Construction has one of the highest turnover rates of any industry.

Some people test out a trade for a few months and move on.

So staying a full year, and then five, is a sign that it’s the right fit.

This month, four Scott Coatings team members are hitting new milestones.

Steve Penington: 5 years.

Jerimiah Olson: 1 year.

Lazaro Diaz Delgado: 1 year.

Tai Nguyen: 1 year.

In an industry where most people don't stay long, this says something about the people and the environment they’re working in.

Because the trades don't hold onto people who don't want to stay.

Data center floors are built to look clean, but aesthetics have nothing to do with it.

The real concern in a data center is particulate control, keeping dust and debris out of environments where servers are running around the clock.

Even small amounts of airborne particles can settle into equipment and cause failure.

And that downtime can cost far more than the coating itself, depending on the facility.

That's why ESD (electrostatic dissipative) coatings are specified for these projects.

They're designed to reduce static charge on the floor surface, which helps prevent particles from becoming airborne in the first place.

Low-particulate systems go a step further; the coating itself has to cure and off-gas, so contaminants aren’t introduced into the space.

That means product selection, application method, and sequencing are all discussed before the project starts, not during.

A standard commercial coating that performs well in an office or warehouse isn't automatically the right call in a data center.

The spec exists for a reason, and understanding why matters as much as knowing how to apply it.

The Phil Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact was created to bring researchers, engineers, and scientists together in a facility designed to move discoveries from the lab into real-world applications faster.

As one of the most prominent research facilities in the Pacific Northwest, the project brought together a team tasked with creating an environment that could support advanced research for years to come.

Hoffman Construction served as the general contractor, and ZGF led the architectural design.

Scott Coatings performed prime painting of GWB walls throughout the facility using standard paint and epoxy systems.

While the research taking place inside the facility is what ultimately defines the project, every trade played a role in helping create the environment where that work happens.

We were proud to be part of a project that remains an important addition to the University of Oregon campus.
