Did you know bats can live up to 40 years? While bats can be scary when you do not expect to see one, they are quite beneficial to the planet. Bats are natural predators. They are nature’s pest control, helping regulate the population of mosquitos, along with helping pollinate plants and moving seeds around. However, they can carry several diseases like histoplasmosis and rabies, where both can be life threatening. They can also carry bat bugs, that feed off the blood of a bat, and they are very similar to bed bugs.
If you have a bat on your property, call HiLow Services at 775-NOPESTS to remove it off your property, and release it elsewhere. We spray high activity areas with a natural solution using rosemary and peppermint oil to prevent the continuation of roosting and keep them away from the area.
We understand the importance of bats and your property, and we will help both of you!

Over the last few weeks, Nevada Department of Agriculture has reported of finding a rabid bat in Douglas County. Bats are a perfect carrier for rabies as it can infect both humans and pets if they are bitten. Bat f***s, or guano.
Rabies in bats can look different, but typically, if you see a bat in daylight or in places they usually wouldn’t be, contact your local animal disease lab and do not interact with the bat in anyway until they provide assistance and advice. Rabies in bats can only be confirmed with laboratory testing.

Cankerworms, or more commonly known as inchworms, are common no matter where you are, but did you know that they are not exactly worms, but larvae? You may have seen a worm dangling from a tree, suspended by a web downwards blowing in the Nevada winds.
Cankerworms are concentrated in more urban areas and woodlands, making Reno and the rest of Northern Nevada a perfect area for them to thrive. There are cankerworms for the spring and the fall seasons, so they can be a year-round issue if proper precaution is not taken. With the forests and trees, we have combined with the drought we live in; they do a significant amount of damage on the weak trees. Cankerworms eat leaves on the trees, where they can easily defoliate it, resulting overall in the death of the entire tree. They typically eat for 5 weeks in the summer, giving them enough time to stress your tree prior to the metamorphosis into the moth. Now that the life cycle is towards the end, egg laying begins for the future worm.
HiLow Services provide a deep root injection for your trees where we inject beneficial substances like fertilizer, insecticide, and soil amendments, and it travels systemically through the tree, even up to the leaves. When the cankerworms try to eat the leaves, they will ingest the insecticide from the injection, ultimately protecting your tree from their harm. If we notice an infestation, a topical, low toxic product is sprayed for instant control and eradication.

Bark beetles are making their way into Northern Nevada, and the damage they can do can be awful and often stress the trees. They cause mortality in many western forests, Nevada being perfect for them. Bark beetles bore into trees and live under the bark, and you can hear them if you place your ear next to the tree. If a tree is healthy, they can typically defend themselves from these beetles because of their sap; however, with the drought that Nevada has been in the last 4 years, unhealthy trees (when they are brown and brittle, they are a perfect fire hazard as well) are a perfect house for the beetles. Bark beetles have already made their way in the Galena area, nesting in the pines. Over 100 million trees in Nevada died from the bark beetles!

HiLow Services provide a deep root injection for your trees where we inject beneficial substances like fertilizer, insecticide, and soil amendment near the roots, and it travels systemically through the tree, even up to the leaves. With the formulation of our products being injected, the tree and its roots increases its health, detouring the bark beetles from making a home under the bark.
