THE TRAVERTINE EDIT
01. THE ORIGIN. Travertine is a type of limestone formed when calcium carbonate precipitates from mineral rich water, often around springs. As the stone develops, trapped gas bubbles and other natural processes create the characteristic pores and voids found throughout the material.
02. CROSS-CUT VS. VEIN-CUT. The direction a block is cut changes the appearance of the stone. Cross-cut travertine is cut across its natural bedding, creating a more cloud like, mottled pattern. Vein-cut travertine is cut parallel to the bedding, revealing linear bands and elongated movement.
03. FILLED VS. UNFILLED. Our travertine slabs are filled, with naturally occurring voids filled during processing to create a smoother, more consistent surface while preserving the stone’s distinctive organic movement and tonal variation.
04. FINISH MATTERS. Honed travertine offers a smooth, matte appearance that highlights its subtle tonal variation. The finish influences both the aesthetic and the practical considerations for a given application.
05. EVERY SLAB IS GEOLOGY IN MOTION. Variations in color, porosity, veining, and fossil like details reflect the conditions under which the stone formed. These natural characteristics are part of what makes travertine distinct from one slab to the next.
