FIRST RAIN OF THE SEASON

As we head into wetter weather, increased moisture can create favorable conditions for certain tree and plant diseases.

A few things to keep an eye out for:

• Mushrooms or fungal growth around the base of trees
• Cankers, oozing, or unusual changes in bark
• Twig or branch dieback
• Standing water or consistently soggy soil around the root zone

🌿 What We're Seeing Right Now | Powdery Mildew

Have you noticed a white, powdery coating on your crape myrtle, roses, or other ornamental plants?

This is often powdery mildew, a common fungal disease we see in late summer as warm days and cooler, more humid nights create ideal conditions for it to develop.

Left untreated, powdery mildew can weaken plants and carry over into the next growing season. Treating it now helps reduce its impact and gives your plants a healthier start next spring.

If you've noticed something in your landscape that doesn't look quite right, we're always happy to take a look and recommend the right solution.

🌳 Every tree tells a different story.

No two properties are the same, which means no two tree care recommendations should be either.

When one of our ISA Certified Arborists visits your property, we evaluate the species, health, structure, growing conditions, surrounding landscape, nearby structures, and any signs of decay, disease, insect activity, or other conditions that could affect the tree's health or safety.

Our recommendations are based on industry standards and arboricultural best practices, with the goal of improving the health, structure, and longevity of your trees while reducing potential risks.

We understand that every homeowner has different priorities and budgets, so we'll walk you through our recommendations, answer your questions, and help prioritize the work in a way that makes sense for both your property and your budget.

The best part? The estimate and the education are completely free.

Have questions about your trees? We'd love to help. Contact us today to schedule your free estimate and receive expert recommendations from one of our ISA Certified Arborists.

“I hired A1 in Redding Ca for annual maintenance on the recently established fire break around our home. After about two weeks after the application of the herbicide I noted the plants seemed healthy. Not a single leaf had turned. I worried that a rain event a few hours after the herbicide was applied washed it off. I called A1 and they indicated they would reapply herbicide as necessary. Well four weeks after application all the underbrush in the fire break died. They know what they are doing! Good job to Nathan and A1!!!! Now it's time to let my home owners insurance company know.” — Stephen J., Google Review

This kind of treatment takes a little time to show, especially depending on weather and conditions. It’s not something you’re going to see overnight, but once it starts working, you can really see the difference.

We don’t just apply it and walk away either. We keep an eye on it and make sure it’s doing what it should. If something needs to be touched up, we come back out and take care of it.

This is a big part of building and maintaining defensible space, especially in areas where underbrush and regrowth can turn into fuel quickly. Whether it’s maintaining a fire break or getting a property cleaned up and under control, this kind of work makes a real difference going into fire season.

If you’ve got something similar on your property or you’re trying to get ahead of it before things dry out, feel free to reach out. We’re always happy to come take a look and walk through options with you.

A big part of defensible space comes down to managing grass, w**ds, and invasive growth.

That can look different depending on the property, anything from w**d whacking and large scale mowing to spraying for longer term control and reducing regrowth.

If you’ve got an area you’re not sure about, it’s worth taking a look before it gets out of hand.

With a red flag warning hitting this early, it’s a good reminder of how important defensible space is here in the North State.

This visual from CAL FIRE shows how defensible space is broken down into zones:

Zone 0 (0–5 feet) is the area closest to your home. This is where you want to remove anything that can easily catch fire. No mulch, no debris, and nothing combustible right up against the structure.

Zone 1 (5–30 feet) focuses on clearing and spacing. Keeping grass cut low, trimming trees, and removing anything that could carry fire toward the home.

Zone 2 (30–100 feet) is about reducing heavier fuels. Spacing out vegetation, managing brush, and keeping things from building up.

It’s also something we’re seeing come up more and more with insurance. A lot of homeowners are being asked to show proper defensible space, and it can impact coverage if it’s not in place.

That’s where our teams come in. Tree work around structures, vegetation management for grass and invasive growth, and forestry work for heavier fuels in larger or more rural areas.

It all comes back to helping protect homes, land, and the community.

Out in Shasta Lake working on underbrush and grass for fuels reduction.

This area was previously masticated, and now we’re spraying to knock back the regrowth and reduce the dry fuels that can build up fast this time of year. It helps make these areas a lot more manageable if a fire were to come through.

We’ve been out here on several projects lately, working alongside our forestry crew. Shasta Lake has been putting a lot into getting ahead of fire season, and it’s been good to be part of it. management
