Ninebark is a popular, low maintenance shrub that does best in full sun.

Its graceful, arching branches need minimal pruning. The older varieties can grow up to 10' tall and wide, with newer introductions reaching 3-4'.

Physocarpus opulifolius, or common ninebark, is a native shrub, with many new cultivars with various leaf colors and sized commonly used in the landscape, such as 'Summer Wine,' 'Amber Jubilee,' 'Little Devil.'

These crucial insects could use some support to ensure their health and longevity.

What can you do?

1. Plant native plants or put in a bee lawn to provide food sources
2. Provide habitat opportunities - exposed soil and ends of dead stems are favorites!
3. Minimize spraying chemicals - for lawns, pest control, etc - all of it adds up!

I know, I know, I know...you've waited a really long time and we're all really excited to see these beautiful annual blooms! BUT, we are still flirting with frosty nights and freezing temperatures, which can damage these tender plants.

In this area, the average last frost date is May 15th, so it's ideal to wait until then to put these precious beauties out; however, if you just can't resist, keep an eye on the weather, and cover them on cold nights.
