Why do we install our wall sheathing VERTICALLY instead of HORIZONTALLY? 🤔

We got asked this a lot on our last post, so here’s the answer.

The truth is: In Wisconsin, the direction of wall sheathing generally doesn’t matter when it’s installed according to code and the manufacturer’s specifications.

Here’s why we choose vertical installation:

Less blocking required. Horizontal installation often requires additional blocking between studs, which creates more thermal bridging (more wood = less insulation).

No structural disadvantage. For the loads our homes experience, vertical sheathing provides the same performance when the proper sheathing, nail pattern, and fastening schedule are used.

Wisconsin doesn’t have extreme wind loads. In high-wind or hurricane-prone regions, engineering requirements may differ. Here, the biggest factors in wall strength are the type of sheathing, fastener schedule, and proper installation—not whether the panels are installed vertically or horizontally.

At the end of the day, building a durable home is about following good building science and manufacturer requirements, not simply the direction a panel is installed.
