Designing a landscape for a modern home is often an exercise in restraint, precision, and perspective.
When working within a limited footprint, every line, texture, and plant selection must have a purpose. The strong architectural geometry of contemporary homes creates both an opportunity and a challenge: the landscape cannot compete with the architecture—it must complement and enhance it.
Understanding perspective is one of the most important skills in landscape design. What appears balanced on paper can feel completely different when viewed from inside the home, from the street, or while moving through the space. The relationship between architecture and landscape is dynamic; each influences how the other is experienced.
Successful landscape design isn’t simply about filling space with plants. It’s about creating a seamless dialogue between structure and nature, using scale, proportion, and sightlines to reinforce the home’s architectural intent. In compact spaces especially, every decision matters.
The most beautiful landscapes are those that feel inevitable—as though the home and garden were designed together from the very beginning.

This holiday weekend, my garden is putting on a masterclass in texture and movement. As a garden designer, I appreciate the moments when a plant combination transitions from a blueprint into pure poetry. Today an ethereal pairing of Allium bulgaricum (Sicilian honey garlic) and Alchemilla mollis (Lady’s mantle) in my parents cut glass. The way the architectural, dangling bells of the Allium rise above the soft, frothy chartreuse clouds of the Alchemilla is nothing short of enchanting. It is a perfect study in contrast, form, and light. Gardens are the ultimate slow art form, but weekends like this remind me exactly why I fell in love with this craft. Design tip: Pair structural bloomers with billowing groundcovers to create instant depth and drama in your borders.Happy long weekend, everyone! May your days be filled with dirt under your fingernails and magic in your borders. PlantCombinations HolidayWeekend InTheGarden BotanicalStyling GardenInspiration💚☘️🪴

There is nothing quite like that “aha!” moment when a design finally clicks. We are currently working on an incredible new construction project with the talented team at , and the synergy between the architecture and the land is going to be next level. One of my favorite parts of the process is sharing the renderings. Trying to explain how a specific tree will catch the morning light or how a stone walkway will perfectly mirror the home’s lines can be tough to visualize. These high detail renderings allow us to pull our clients right into the dream showing them exactly how their future sanctuary will look and feel before the first shovel even hits the ground.Stay tuned as we bring this modern masterpiece to life! Chasing the spring light with a palette of pure white. These fresh container blooms are the perfect clean contrast against the electric chartreuse of the awakening landscape. And rising through it all? A sea of ‘Mount Everest’ Allium, dancing on invisible stems and adding a structural magic. Spring, you are a dream. Spring has definitely sprung, but these crisp evenings are still perfect for cozying up! As a garden designer, I love this sweet spot in the season. The daytime warms up the soil for new growth, while the cool nights make it ideal for gathering around a fire with family and friends. Here are a few ways to elevate your outdoor living space for those chilly spring nights.
Make it a focal point: Your fire pit doesn’t just have to be a pit. In our Westport project, we elevated the fire experience with a stunning custom made metal sculpture that represents a beautiful, organic collection of sticks. It’s functional warmth by night and striking garden art by day! Zone your seating: Arrange comfortable, deep seated outdoor furniture to encourage conversation. Face your chairs inward toward the fire, leaving enough space for easy flow and warm drink placement. Layer with lush textures: Keep outdoor throws and pillows nearby. Even though your garden is waking up with fresh blooms, a plush, weather resistant blanket makes the evening chill feel like a cozy luxury. Happy May Day! Here’s to enjoying your outdoor spaces from the first morning coffee to the last evening ember. 🌿🥂💚☘️

A sudden pop of color today! The parrot tulips have arrived and they’re doing exactly what I hoped: breaking all the rules in the most beautiful way.
Unlike traditional tulips, these feel almost theatrical. Ruffled petals, painterly streaks, and that slightly untamed posture that makes a planting feel alive rather than arranged. I like to think of them as the garden’s way of loosening its collar.
In design, I often rely on structure, repetition, rhythm, restraint. But moments like this matter just as much. A deliberate interruption. A flare of movement and texture that catches you off guard as you pass by.
Planted in a quiet palette, they become the focal point. Paired with softer companions, they read like brushstrokes. Either way, they remind us that a garden should never feel too controlled.
Let something surprise you this season.

Spring always feels like a quiet kind of magic, soft at first, almost hesitant, then suddenly everywhere at once. As a garden designer, I get a front row seat to this unfolding story each year. What makes it even more special is knowing that these moments begin long before the first bloom.
Every fall, when the air sharpens and the garden starts to sleep, we’re out there planting bulbs, tiny, unassuming promises tucked into the soil. It’s an act of faith as much as design. Months pass, winter lingers, and then just when it feels like the world has been holding its breath spring arrives, and those hidden plans burst into color.
Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths… they don’t last forever. That’s part of their beauty. Spring reminds us that not everything is meant to stay some things are meant to dazzle, to lift us, and to gently pass, making room for what’s next.
So yes, spring is fleeting. But maybe that’s exactly why it matters so much.
