Before you crank up the thermostat this fall, there are a few other places around your home worth checking first. 🏡
As temperatures start dropping, your heating system is about to spend a lot more time running. A few simple habits can help you use energy more efficiently while still keeping the house comfortable:
🍂 Check your air filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make your HVAC system work harder to move air through your home.
🌡️ Be mindful of the thermostat. Around 68°F while you’re home and awake is a good target during heating season. When you’re asleep or away, turning it down a few degrees can help reduce energy use.
🪟 Check for drafts. Feel cold air around a window or door? That can also mean heated air is escaping. Weatherstripping and sealing obvious gaps can help keep more of that warmth inside.
🔥 Keep up with HVAC maintenance. A seasonal check gives your system a chance to be cleaned, inspected, and prepared for the months when you’ll rely on it most.
🛋️ Keep vents clear. Furniture, rugs, and curtains blocking your vents can interfere with airflow, so give that warm air room to circulate.
October is Energy Awareness Month, making it a good time to pay a little extra attention to how your home is using energy before colder weather settles in.
