Water drainage is super important when setting new posts! Create a slope and a channel (or two) in your concrete, and your post will last much longer!

If you dig your hole 2 feet, 6 inches (bottom 6 inches is pea gravel), it can withstand our crazy winds we get here much better as well!

How to install new trim!

Step 1: Use a Neodymium Magnet to find the studs! A stud finder will also work but the magnet will latch right on the drywall screw...super easy (picture shown below)

Step 2: Once you have found the metal drywall screw using the magnet, follow an imaginary line straight down to your trim!

Step 3: Use an 18 Guage Brad Nail gun (or a hammer and trim nails) to secure the trim board to the stud. You don't need to get to crazy with this! Just two small nails on each stud. One near the top of the trim board, and one near the bottom.

Step 4: Close the gaps! Purchase a tube of all purpose baseboard caulk and cut the tip at a 45 degree angle as shown. Draw a line on the opposite side of your 45 degree cut! This will help you know where to apply the caulk!

Step 5: Run a small bead of caulk into each gap, then run the very end of your finger over the bead to push the caulk into the gap. This seals everything, but also gives your trim a finished look!

Step 6: Place a very small bead of caulk into each trim nail hole that you created and run over it with your finger. This will virtually eliminate the holes giving an almost finished look. To get a completely finished look, apply paint!

That's it! You can purchase your trim boards at Lowes or Menards, just cut a small piece of yours out (the damaged piece) and take it with you!

Pro Tip! For small projects, use an oscillating tool to get very precise cuts! Just place your old trim board on the new one...draw a line where it ends....then make your cut!

Quick Tip if your gutters are tan!

The Krylon Matte Sand Dollar is an almost exact match if you need to do some touch ups! Purchased from Lowes, but it can probably be found anywhere in Rapid.

Most of us trip over, run over, and step on our downspouts. This makes them kind of ugly, (usually around the hinge) but still functional. A quick coat of paint makes them practically new again!

Concrete Resurfacing before and after! The backside of the pad had a 2 inch gap from the house. It was filled in with normal concrete, then the entire pad resurfaced to match!

DIY Hack for squeaky doors! Air Compressor/Tool oil will virtual eliminate all of those super annoying squeaks! The reason is due to its viscosity (it's really thin) and will seep into the hinge gaps very easily! It also lasts a really long time as it's designed for high RPM air tools.

There are certainly other things you can use, I'm just a huge fan of this way as it's worked very well over the years!

Video included on how to apply!

Here is a link where you can buy, or read up on this type of oil! Just make sure you buy the one with the included tip.

Stone work today! If you have noticed that your stones are cracking, it's ok, this is a very normal thing, however, a small crack can lead to a very large crack if not fixed! This can cause foundation issues! Foundation issues are more common with sidewalk cracks right next to your house as water is able to seep in and eventually do the same thing to your Foundation as it has done to the sidewalk!

Same principle for leaking gutters, gutter extensions that are too short, or a yard that slopes inward to the house. Bottom line.....water is bad!

Here is what happens (usually). Water gets inside of those small cracks, freezes and expands, then thaws, then freezes, etc... This causes cracks in stone, driveways, and sidewalks to eventually get much larger. (This can takes years before it's a major problem) It's usually even worse if the ground below the concrete wasn't packed correctly!

The DIY fix!

Buy some mortar caulk (as shown in the after picture) and fill those small cracks in before it starts getting cold! This keeps the moisture from seeping in and causing a pretty big problem down the road!

If your stones can be removed, apply construction adhesive to the backs of them (apply very generously) and stick them back in place! Find something to prop them against the wall in their original position to allow the adhesive to cure. (That's what the rocks underneath in the photos are for).

The last step with this project is to color match the mortar caulk to make it blend in!

The Pro Fix!

At the end of the day, nothing beats mortaring the stones again! This isn't as hard as you might think and the mortar you need can be purchased at Lowes or Menards!

As always, if you need help, I am just a phone call or message away with any of your projects!

What a transformation! Crazy colors, but it turned out great! This property needed a ton of primer, new paint, the fence was leaning (two broken posts), the deck was falling apart, and water was leaking into the basement. All fixed!!!
