CJ D***s is our October 2026 program.

A beautiful garden shouldn't have to wait for spring. That is the philosophy behind gardener and plant enthusiast CJ D***s's October GWC presentation, "Creating magic All 12 months of the year with Great Plant Choices.” The secret to a garden with year-round appeal begins with thoughtful plant selection. Rather than choosing a plant simply because it looks spectacular at the garden center, CJ encourages gardeners to consider what that plant will contribute throughout the year. Perhaps the most valuable lesson from CJ’s presentation is also the simplest: when selecting a plant don't ask only "What will this plant look like in May”, ask instead "What will this bring to my garden in January, April, July, and October?” Learn how you can create year-round splendor in your garden when you attend the October meeting of the GWC!

Our next meeting is Tuesday September 15.

The speaker is Beth Gayden, owner of SHROOMS 2 Grow, for whom mushrooms are much more than an occasional garden curiosity. They have become a passion, a livelihood, and an opportunity to teach others about the fascinating world of fungi.

For home gardeners, perhaps the most intriguing lesson from Shroom 2 Grow is that mushroom cultivation doesn't necessarily require a traditional garden bed. A shaded woodland area and properly inoculated hardwood logs can become an entirely different kind of garden.

Gayden encourages others to learn how mushrooms grow rather than simply purchase the finished product. Through Shrooms 2 Grow, Beth Gayden has turned curiosity about something growing on the forest floor into a distinctive North Carolina agricultural enterprise.

The meeting starts at 7:00 PM at the JC Raulston Arboretum, Tuesday, September 15th. Presentation is 7:30 after refreshments and fellowship. You do not need to be a member of GWC or JCRaulston to attend. Free.

Our August 18 meeting -- Jim and Lynn Swanson.

Every gardener has that one plant that captures their imagination. For Lynn and Jim Swanson, it is the Japanese maple. Lynn has an infectious enthusiasm for plants and an educator's gift for explaining why one maple thrives in a particular location while another needs different conditions. Jim's quiet support and shared love of gardening have helped turn countless ideas into reality, from carefully placing new specimens to maintaining a landscape that continues to evolve year after year.

As active members of the Maple Society of North America, the Swansons have helped strengthen interest in Japanese maples throughout the Southeast.

Perhaps the greatest gift Lynn and Jim have given the gardening community is their example. They demonstrate that exceptional gardens don’t require unlimited budgets and overnight success. Their garden reminds us that while trees may be the foundation of a landscape, friendship and generosity are what truly make a gardening community.

Come to the GWC August meeting to hear these very special gardeners tell us about a very special tree – the maple. Join your friends and fellow gardeners of the GWC to find out more at our next meeting, Tuesday August 18th, 7:00 PM at the JC Raulston Arboretum!

For our July meeting, presenter Helen Yoest will speak on the benefits of native plants for pollinators and discuss how seeds, nectar, and pollen from native shrubs and perennials are fodder for butterflies, birds, and bees.

Some of her favorite plants native to the area are cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis, a hummingbird favorite, coneflowers, echinacea especially for native bees, butterflies, and gold finches, Yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria, for our winter resident native birds, and milkweed, Asclepias, which is the only host plant for the Monarch butterfly.
