For our July meeting, presenter Helen Yoest will speak on the benefits of native plants for pollinators and discuss how seeds, nectar, and pollen from native shrubs and perennials are fodder for butterflies, birds, and bees.

Some of her favorite plants native to the area are cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis, a hummingbird favorite, coneflowers, echinacea especially for native bees, butterflies, and gold finches, Yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria, for our winter resident native birds, and milkweed, Asclepias, which is the only host plant for the Monarch butterfly.

Join your friends and fellow gardeners of the GWC to find out more at our next meeting, Tuesday July 21st, 7:00 PM at the JC Raulston Arboretum. You do not have to be a member of GWC or JCR to attend. Free.

Our next meeting is Tuesday June 16th at the usual time and place. JC Raulston Arboretum 19:00 (7PM) meet and greet and refreshments, program at 19:30. Free. You do not have to be a member of GWC or JC Raulston to attend.

Our April meeting speaker is Dan Danford. For several years he has been the person bring you the flower show at the state fair.

Dan Danford plays the central role in one of North Carolina’s most visited agricultural showcases—the horticulture and flower show division of the North Carolina State Fair.

Serving as superintendent of the program, Dan oversees the coordination, evaluation, and presentation of hundreds of plant-based exhibits that reflect both the state’s agricultural heritage and its evolving horticultural practices.

In addition to his work with the State Fair, Dan serves as a plant specialist at Campbell Road Nursery in Raleigh, where he provides guidance to gardeners across a range of experience levels. His dual roles—public-facing at the fair and community-based in retail horticulture—position him as both an educator and practitioner.

Monthly meetings begin officially at 7:30 PM at the Ruby McSwain Education Center, JC Raulston Arboretum, on the third Tuesday of each month (that’s the 21st in April this year). Refreshments and social time start at 7:00. Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome. A free of charge event.
