What if the journey between Downtown Raleigh and Dix Park became a destination itself?

Breaking Ground on the Future of Hobbton High School

Last week, we were honored to join Sampson County Schools, community leaders, students, educators, and project partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Hobbton High School. This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Hobbton community and a significant investment in the future of its students. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 24, 2026.

Designed to support approximately 600 students, the new campus will provide modern, flexible learning environments that foster collaboration, innovation, and student success. The project reflects a shared commitment to creating a safe, inspiring, and future-ready educational experience for generations to come. The planned facility includes approximately 119,000 square feet and is intended to replace the existing high school with a modern learning environment.

We are grateful to Sampson County Schools, our design and construction partners, and the many stakeholders who have helped bring this vision to life. We look forward to watching this campus rise from the ground and become a place where students learn, grow, and thrive.

Every great community invests in its future. Last Friday, Public Schools of Robeson County took another important step forward with the opening of the new Robeson Career & Technical Education Center, Planetarium, and Science Center.

This project represents more than a new facility. It is a commitment to opportunity, workforce development and the success of future generations.

Designed to support hands-on, career-focused learning, the new campus provides students with opportunities to explore pathways in fields ranging from skilled trades and healthcare to technology and engineering. The facility also includes a new planetarium, restoring an important educational and community resource for Robeson County.

At SfL+a, we believe educational facilities should do more than house programs. They should inspire students, support educators and create meaningful connections between learning and the future.

The opening of Robeson CTEC reflects what can happen when a community invests in its students and provides them with spaces designed to help them discover their talents, build new skills and pursue their goals.

Congratulations to the students, educators and families who will shape the future of this remarkable facility.

The true impact of this project won't be measured in square footage, but in the opportunities created, careers launched and lives changed for years to come.

Building Together: Welcoming EB Frink Educators to the Site

We recently had the opportunity to welcome faculty and staff from EB Frink Middle School out to the construction site for a firsthand look at the progress taking shape.

Across two tours, approximately 30 teachers joined us alongside our partners at Metcon, Inc. to walk the site, ask questions, and begin envisioning how their future classrooms and shared spaces will support teaching and learning. It was an exciting moment seeing the people who will bring this building to life begin to connect with the spaces designed for their students.

The new EB Frink Middle School is thoughtfully organized to create smaller learning communities while strengthening connections to shared spaces, all within a modern, high-performance facility designed to serve Lenoir County Public Schools for years to come.

Experiences like this reinforce what makes these projects meaningful: collaboration. Working alongside the school district, construction partners, and educators ensures that the final environment reflects not only design intent, but the real needs of the community it serves.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to listen, share progress, and support the transition into a space that will inspire both students and staff.

Our team was proud to present The Oak Line at the 2026 Growth & Development Summit, hosted by the Greater Raleigh Chamber.

Our team was selected through the Community Design Challenge to lead a breakout session focused on how thoughtful, place‑based design can shape more connected, resilient communities.

This work reflects a truly collaborative effort with SfL+a Architects, Firstfloor, Surface 678 and Preston Montague —bringing together architecture, development, landscape and urban ecology to explore what’s possible along Raleigh’s evolving corridors.

Surface 678, SfL+a, and Preston Montague recently collaborated on a submission for the Wake County Community Design Challenge to present a bold vision for a greenway connection in Raleigh. Our team developed a concept dubbed "The Oakline," which proposes a connection between Dix Park and Downtown Raleigh.
Designed as an at-grade, and at-times elevated, tree-lined promenade, The Oakline will connect The Grove at Dix Park to Lichtin Plaza at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts, transforming a challenging route into a safe, accessible, and inspiring experience for everyone. More than just a greenway, The Oakline represents a significant investment in Raleigh's future, designed to strengthen community connections, support local growth, and create a lasting civic landmark rooted in sustainability and innovation.
We are thrilled to announce that our team ranked first in the juried Design Challenge and has been awarded the opportunity to present our concept at the 2026 Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Growth and Development Summit!

Construction Begins on Automated Parking Facility, Marking the Second Phase of City Gateway Development

Construction has officially begun on a two-level automated parking facility at City Gateway, marking the second phase of the mixed-use redevelopment at the southern edge of downtown Raleigh. This milestone follows the completion of Mira Raleigh, which served as the first phase of the broader City Gateway vision.

Located at 130 Kindley Street, the automated parking facility represents a major investment in infrastructure that will support future phases of City Gateway while advancing Raleigh’s goals for sustainability, mobility, and equitable growth.

Designed to reduce energy consumption by up to 60 percent compared to conventional parking garages, the fully electric automated facility will include 228 parking spaces, vehicle loading bays, lifts, and shuttles. By minimizing vehicle idling, reducing its physical footprint, and preparing for future electric vehicle adoption, the facility supports Raleigh’s Community Climate Action Plan and evolving clean transportation priorities.

The parking structure is a critical component of City Gateway’s long-term, phased development strategy. Building on the foundation established by Mira Raleigh, future phases of City Gateway will introduce a vibrant mix of residential, commercial, educational, hospitality, and public uses that strengthen downtown connectivity and support daily life.

“City Gateway represents a long-term investment in Raleigh’s future,” said Robbie Ferris, Managing Member, Capital City Urban Development. “This next phase is about more than infrastructure. It is about creating a connected, walkable district that reflects Raleigh’s history while responding to how people live, work, and move today.
