THE TREE HOUSE // East London

Raw, compact, and quietly elevated.

Set against the industrial energy of London’s East End, this project explores contrast. A narrow urban footprint transformed into something immersive and considered.

The Edit:

• Botanical Curation:
Layered planting and varied height blur the boundary between the terrace and the treeline beyond.

• Design & Furnishing:
A saturated palette of deep teals and citrus tones cuts through the dark structure.

• The Atmosphere:
The stillness of an unusual position. Overlooking a neighbouring cemetery.

The Lost Wood 🌳

Once part of the ancient Great North Wood, this garden now sits within a quieter layer of that history. Beneath two mature trees, a restrained woodland planting draws on shade-loving species to create a space that feels settled, natural, and enduring.

A garden not imposed, but found.

Opus I-III · Exotic Suburbia 🌿

“A historic past with a subtropical future.”

Opus · I

Beneath the pergola, order is restored.

Order always brings a sense of peace. A sweeping lawn, flanked by ornate Cheshire edging, drawing influence from the times of Roman occupation. The lawn leads to the pergola, no longer bound by wisteria’s untamed clutch. Now a functional space for quiet reflection, a secret escape just a short stroll from home.

Opus · II

A place where Sunday mornings begin.

The patio was laid in classic ivory porcelain, durable and low maintenance for the British climate. Steps were crafted in London stock brick, carefully matched to the original Victorian property. The space wraps around to the side return, providing a garden that works as hard as it is beautiful.

Opus · III

The best is yet to come.

Looking back through the pergola as the October sun drops low over Nunhead, the transformation reveals itself in golden light. New planting beds await spring. Subtropical specimens from the Cornish coast, cottage garden perennials, and deep in the shadier corners, plants from England’s ancient woodlands. Come March, a sea of English bluebells will rise.

We all dream of a fairy tale ending.

A space once forgotten, reborn. What was once a lost wilderness, hidden in the heart of a Victorian suburb, has been transformed into a garden cherished by those who call it their own. A place built for living, for laughter, and for the quiet moments in between.

The story of this garden is only just beginning.

Genesis · I-III - Exotic Suburbia 🌿

Before design, there was discovery.

What we found was not expected. A hidden, overgrown world, quietly thriving behind the order of Victorian London. Banana trees stretched skyward, a lychee tree heavy with fruit, held within a sheltered microclimate that felt entirely its own.

It was October, at 51°N, and yet the garden told a different story. This was not a blank canvas, but something already alive. Our role was not to impose, but to understand what was already there.

Set within one of South East London’s most characterful enclaves, this project explores a quieter dialogue between architecture and planting; where restraint gives way to softness and time slows just enough to notice.

Completed November 2024

Locus · I

A village that refused to be swallowed by a city.

Under the reign of Queen Victoria, London expanded rapidly, absorbing rural communities like Nunhead into its growing metropolis. Yet here, something of the village endured; in its streets, its architecture, and its independent spirit.

Locus · II

A lost world, quietly thriving.

A stone’s throw away lies Nunhead Cemetery, one of London’s Magnificent Seven. Now as much nature reserve as burial ground, it offers a wilder counterpoint to the surrounding streets; an untamed landscape where time, planting, and decay exist in quiet balance.

Locus · III

Where the quiet magic happens.

Nestled beneath the railway arches beside Nunhead Station, The Nunhead Gardener became a constant source of inspiration. A place of craft and care, where planting feels both considered and instinctive; it was here that my own journey into garden design quietly deepened.
