President and founder of Maurer Architecture in Raleigh, North Carolina, an award-winning firm recognized for urban restoration and adaptive reuse. In 2005, he founded TightLines Designs to create sustainable, affordable housing and healthy communities. Through both firms, David has served as a dedicated leader and mentor. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech and a Master of Architecture from the University of Washington. In 2025, he received both AIA North Carolina’s Gail A. Lindsey Award and Preservation North Carolina’s DeWayne H. Anderson Award for Housing, recognizing his contributions to community design and downtown revitalization.

Meet Marisa! On most days, you can find her zipping around Raleigh on her bike and exploring the city. Recently she has been enjoying the Commuter Bike Bus into downtown, organized by along the greenway trail. In the office, Marisa works on projects ranging from hospitality and retail to office spaces, and she enjoys bringing her clients’ dreams to life while further enriching the community she loves. Marisa is also involved with the local chapter (National Organization of Minority Architects), volunteering at their annual summer architecture and design camp, Project Pipeline.

Gateway Plaza off of Crabtree Blvd in Raleigh is full of various tenants, becoming a hub for work, dining, and play! Most recently a fresh batch of new(ish) tenants has occupied their spaces. Working with these business owners to bring their projects to life and watching this area buzz with activity is why we do what we do!

After 4 years of grant applications, design, and construction we celebrated the ribbon-cutting and open house for this newly renovated downtown landmark. A new chapter for 16 W. Main Avenue, Taylorsville, NC.

Owned by the County and funded by an NC Commerce Rural Transformation Grant, the former bank and local Chamber of Commerce, now houses first-floor retail and upper-floor apartments aimed at attracting teachers. The first floor is now an expanded Kiley’s Sugar Shoppe. We’re proud to have been part of bringing this building back to life in downtown Taylorsville—and even prouder to see the community come together to celebrate it.

This summer, we welcomed Diversify Architecture fellows into the office to support their growth, share our perspective on the industry, and our approach to design. Diversify Architecture connects students with programs to increase awareness of the field, admission into universities, and follow-through in the licensure process.

During the fellows' visit, we talked about the firm's history and our mission, and walked through the building process by reviewing a few projects. We organized a site visit to the ongoing Boylan Pearce project, where students were able to see different phases of construction and discuss the process of historic tax credits.

North Carolina Downtown Development Association (NCDDA) had its annual Large Cities Conference, where David Maurer, who serves as a Board Member, hosted a panel discussion with James Goodnight and Brian Wallace. The panel discussed multiple downtown properties - their history, restoration, and their contribution to downtown Wilmington. Attendees then toured the Seabird Restaurant building, HQ for Untappd, and three other buildings currently under renovation - while learning about Historic Tax Credits and the value these buildings bring to the city.

Sunflower's Cafe at the Rockway building brings new life to a familiar name for many in Raleigh. Once a staple at Seaboard Station, the restaurant returns under the direction of the original owner’s son.

Designed as an easygoing, all-day destination, the space shifts from daytime café to relaxed evening hangout. Wood elements—many crafted by the owner—add a personal, hand-built character throughout. The layout, lighting, and material selection create a layered atmosphere that supports both the energy of a busy morning and the slower pace of an evening spent lingering.
