SAFE EXCAVATION STARTS WITH UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS
Many contractors believe that once utilities are marked, the job is safe to proceed… but that’s not always the case.

Marking is only the first step. Real safety comes from how excavation is performed after the locate.

⚠️ What should every contractor know?
❎Always expose utilities carefully before using heavy equipment
✅Respect tolerance zones (at least 1 foot on each side)
✳️Never assume all utilities are detected
❇️Plan excavation with awareness, not assumptions
🚧 A single mistake can lead to delays, unexpected costs, and safety hazards.
At Projects R&F USA, we don’t just mark utilities…

👉 We help contractors understand what’s underground and how to work safely around it.

811 DOES NOT LOCATE PRIVATE UTILITIES ⚠️🚧
📞 Many contractors believe that calling 811 is enough before excavation…

But there is a critical detail that can cost thousands of dollars:
811 does NOT locate private utilities.

Before any digging project, 811 helps mark public utilities such as main lines located in public right-of-way areas.

However, many underground utilities inside private property are NOT included in the 811 service.

This creates a hidden risk that often leads to unexpected damages during excavation.

⚠️ Common private utilities NOT marked by 811
🔵 Water lines to buildings
🔴 Electrical lines to lighting poles or structures
🟢 Private sewer and drain lines
🟠 Internet and fiber lines داخل la propiedad
🟣 Irrigation systems

Why this is a serious problem
• Contractors assume all utilities are marked
• Private lines remain undetected
• Excavation begins with incomplete information
• Damages lead to delays, repairs, and liability
💰 One damaged utility line can cost thousands in repairs and lost time.

📌 As explained in our blog:
811 is an important first step — but it is not a complete solution for safe excavation.

⚠️ Private utilities require professional locating before excavation.

THE MOST COMMON UTILITIES HIT DURING EXCAVATION ⚠️🚧

Every day, excavation projects begin without fully understanding what is buried underground.

Unfortunately, striking a hidden utility is more common than many contractors think.

Damaging underground infrastructure can cause project delays, costly repairs, service interruptions, and serious safety risks.

Knowing which utilities are most frequently damaged can help contractors take the right precautions before digging.

⚠️ The 5 most common utilities hit during excavation
🔵 Private water lines
Often installed after construction and rarely documented.
🟢 Sewer and drain lines
These pipes are commonly located near buildings and foundations.
🔴 Private electrical lines
Used for lighting poles, buildings, gates, or parking areas.
🟠 Communication and fiber optic cables
Internet and telecom lines are frequently shallow and difficult to detect without proper equipment.
🟡 Gas service lines
One of the most dangerous utilities to damage during excavation.

Why these damages happen
• Incomplete utility records
• Private utilities not marked by public systems
• Excavation starting without professional locating
• Utilities installed years after the original construction

💰 Hitting just one underground utility can cost thousands of dollars in repairs and delays.

Before digging, contractors should ensure that all underground utilities — both public and private — are properly located.

⚠️ Safe excavation always starts with utility locating.

If you are planning to excavate, contact us to help identify underground utilities before digging.

⚠️ CALL BEFORE YOU CUT THE PAVEMENT

If you suspect a broken underground water line, always locate nearby utilities before excavation. This simple step can prevent damaging power, gas, communication, or other critical underground services.

❄️ EMERGENCY WATER LINE BREAK AFTER EXTREME FREEZE

On January 29, we received an emergency request after the main water supply pipe of a residential complex broke due to extreme cold weather following heavy snowfall.

Temperatures dropped to 20°F, causing the water inside the pipe to freeze and expand, creating extreme pressure that eventually fractured the pipe beneath the pavement.

📍 Contractor: AJET Plumbing
📍 Location: 835 Navaho Dr, Raleigh, NC
📍 Service Date: 01/29/2026

Our team arrived on site to locate and mark underground utilities around the leak area, allowing the plumbing crew to safely cut the pavement and repair the damaged pipe without hitting other buried infrastructure.

👷‍♂️ Work performed on site

• Marking of underground utilities around the repair zone
• Identification of the main water supply pipe
• Location of nearby utilities to prevent accidental damage
• Coordination with the supervisor before excavation

🔬 Why pipes break during extreme cold

Water expands when it freezes. At 32°F (0°C) it turns to ice and increases its volume by about 9%.
Inside a pipe, this expansion creates extreme pressure that can exceed the resistance of materials like PVC or copper, causing cracks or rupture.

Often the pipe cracks during freezing, but the leak becomes visible only when the ice melts and water begins escaping.

⚠️ Safe excavation always starts with utility locating.

THE SYNCHRONIZATION OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT ON JOB SITES

Large construction projects require more than heavy equipment and skilled workers. They require planning, coordination, and precise ex*****on to ensure the project advances efficiently and safely.

When construction activities are not properly synchronized, projects can experience delays, resource conflicts, and safety risks.

Successful construction sites operate like well-orchestrated systems, where teams, machinery, and logistics work in sequence to maintain productivity.

Several practices help achieve this coordination:

🔹 Proper planning of activities and work sequences
🔹 Daily coordination between contractors and operators
🔹 Effective communication among field teams
🔹 Real-time monitoring of equipment and work fronts

This video shows Projects R&F USA, Inc. present during the construction of a Mega Greenhouse for tomato production by Kind Farm Services.

📍 200 Maynard Dr
Austinville, VA

Large projects like this require coordination between multiple construction teams and heavy equipment working simultaneously.

Planning also includes understanding what lies beneath the ground before excavation begins.

At Projects R&F USA, we help contractors identify underground utilities before excavation begins.
