We recently completed this thoughtfully designed rear addition, expanding the home while preserving its original character and outdoor space. From the beginning, the homeowners came to the table with a clear vision, full architectural plans, and an experienced designer, which allowed the process to move efficiently. Rather than starting from scratch, our team focused on refining details, engineering the structure, and coordinating the build to ensure a smooth transition from design to construction.
The scope of work was concentrated almost entirely at the rear of the home, with minimal impact to the existing interior. The addition included a new master suite and laundry area, connected to the original house by a widened hallway that felt intentional and cohesive rather than like a simple pass-through. Thoughtful interior adjustments to the existing sitting room helped tie the old and new spaces together, creating a natural flow throughout the home.
Storage played a major role in the design of the new master suite. Instead of traditional framed closets, the space was built with full-height, floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry featuring integrated interior lighting. This approach created clean, accessible, and highly functional storage while elevating the overall aesthetic. Every element was designed to eliminate dark or wasted space and to support efficient, everyday use.
From a construction standpoint, access and logistics required careful planning. While the site itself was manageable, reaching the rear of the property required creative coordination. Our team carefully planned material deliveries, subcontractor access, and crew movement to keep the project running smoothly. Drainage was another critical consideration. The addition intersected natural water flow on the property, so grading, drainage paths, and sleeved footings were all thoughtfully planned before foundations were poured, ensuring long-term performance and preventing future issues.
Additional coordination was required to integrate an existing generator into the new footprint. Plans were adjusted as needed to meet code requirements while maintaining accessibility and improving functionality around the addition. This collaborative approach allowed form and function to work together without compromising the overall design intent.
The project was led by Harry Marks and expertly executed by Project Manager David Drenzek, who did a brilliant job making the homeowners happy through excellent communication, seamless coordination of trades, and proactive problem-solving as challenges arose. His attention to detail and commitment to maintaining an unmatched level of quality were evident throughout the build and played a key role in the project’s success.
The project was supported by a strong team of trade partners, including Cardinal Cabinets for the custom cabinetry and a dedicated flooring team that delivered high-quality results. Designer Anna Applegate was integral from the start, skillfully balancing client goals with construction realities and helping guide decisions that elevated the finished space.
The completed addition feels purposeful, seamless, and fully integrated into the existing home. It reflects what’s possible when early collaboration, thoughtful design, and intentional construction planning come together to create a space that enhances how the homeowners live every day.
