Mark your calendars! The Antique Craftsman Showcase returns Saturday, November 14th!

For one afternoon, we’ll open the doors to our workshop and invite you to see craftsmanship up close, meet the artisans behind the work, and hear from guest speakers in preservation, restoration, and traditional craft.

There will be plenty to see throughout the shop, including a very special 1907 Franklin automobile restoration we can’t wait to share!

There’s a reason French polishing has been used by craftspeople for generations.

Despite the name, French polish isn’t a product but a traditional finishing technique. Shellac is applied by hand in many thin layers using a polishing pad, gradually building a smooth, lustrous surface with beautiful depth and clarity.

It takes patience, a practiced hand, and plenty of repetition, but the result can bring out the richness and character of the wood in a way that’s hard to miss.

Want to see the technique up close and learn it firsthand? Master craftsman Floyd Rosini will be teaching a three-part French Polishing Workshop through HRA beginning October 5th.

This piece just proves you never quite know what’s hiding underneath!

When this secretary and bookcase hutch arrived at our shop, much of the woodwork was concealed beneath a very dark finish. As our craftsmen carefully removed it, the delicate inlays began to emerge; details characteristic of the American Federal style.

What first appeared to be a rather dark, understated piece turned out to have an incredible amount of craftsmanship waiting underneath!

Sometimes restoration isn’t about adding something new. Sometimes it’s about revealing what was there all along!

While we were reupholstering this 1950s dinette set, we uncovered the original (albeit damaged) green cracked ice vinyl upholstery!

Red, yellow, and gray/silver cracked ice vinyl is still reproduced today, but unfortunately, green is so much harder to come by. So, the set's owner chose a complementary green vinyl for the new upholstery and we think it turned out beautifully!

Craftsmanship is something we learn from one another.

Here, third-generation master craftsman Floyd Rosini is sharing his knowledge with apprentice Jackson, just as generations of craftspeople have done before.

That’s one of the most meaningful parts of an apprenticeship like HRA. It’s about more than learning a set of techniques. It’s about learning alongside skilled craftspeople who have spent years honing their abilities, often with someone guiding them along the way, too. One craftsperson teaches an apprentice. That apprentice grows into a craftsperson. And one day, they may be the one passing those skills on!

That’s how a craft becomes a tradition and how knowledge that could easily be lost stays alive, useful, and growing for the next generation.
