Four growing seasons ago, these were saplings you could carry in one hand. Now Basil can barely walk through this Pocket Forest. Look at the ground: no weeds, no invasives, nothing but leaf litter and shade. That's what happens when you plant densely and let a forest behave like a forest.

Hayden stops at a pecan and points out something most people miss: it's a hickory. Carya illinoinensis, native to the river valleys west of here, not to the Piedmont. It came east with the orchards, and the orchards stayed. Near native, long-lived, and hiding in plain sight in a lot of old yards.

Those dark, swollen galls on your cherry or plum are black knot, a fungus that settles in and spreads along the branch. The cut has to go well below what you can see, because the fungus is already living in wood that still looks healthy. Here's how our Treecologists approach it.

Cup plant leaves fuse around the stem and hold rainwater after a storm. Birds drink from them. So do insects. Basil found this katydid taking its time visiting one in his Piedmont Prairie.

Redbud flowers grow straight out of the bark, no twig required. They show up before the leaves do, turning bare gray branches magenta for a couple of weeks in early spring. They are also edible, faintly tart, and tasty scattered over a salad. Hayden walks you through one of our favorite native flowering trees.
