Today in the world of pest control in the NRV, our Technician crew ran in to this surprised bear this afternoon near the Merrimac area of Blacksburg, while providing a Residential Quarterly preventative treatment.
They spent the morning taking care of our Christiansburg Monthly Commercial and Industrial accounts, ranging from clothing stores, industrial warehouses, auto shops, restaurants and retail stores.
Just like the bear above that is getting ready to hibernate, many insects are in the same Winter survival mode. Wasps, Stink Bugs, Cluster Flies and Asian Lady Beetles are all spending their sunny afternoons sunbathing on structures, searching for the perfect winter vacation spot to hunker down. That could be your attic or inside your walls or even inside of commercial properties.

Today in pest control around the New River Valley, our Technicians were out performing routine preventative monthly commercial services and Residential Quarterly services in Pulaski and Dublin, as well as taking care of some Claytor Lake homes around the Dublin side of the Lake.
Meanwhile, I spent the day taking care of a mouse issue in Radford, big wolf spiders and yellow jackets in the ground, in the Prices Fork area near the Kipps Farm development, and then took care of some yellow jackets in a wall void above an attic closet door in Riner, as shown in the thermal imaging photo.
Yesterday, in Christiansburg, I was able to locate another yellow jacket nest in a wall void that were entering around a chimney and getting inside a bedroom closet and bedroom. I was able to locate the nest with thermal imaging and cut away the sheet rock to extract the nest and live yellow jackets for the client.

Today is September 14th, Mid-September, that time of year when the overnight temperatures start getting much cooler.

It is also the time of year when Over-Wintering pests start flocking to homes and other buildings in the late afternoon, to sunbathe and seek out their hiding spots, to hunker down for the Winter.

If you regularly see stink bugs, box elder bugs, Asian lady beetles or small flies on the outside of your building this time of year or inside of your buildings in the Spring, this is the time of year when you should have a professional treatment applied as a preventative barrier to the exterior soffits, eaves, gable vents, window and door casings, and exterior siding gaps or crevices.

Getting a jump on these pests now will significantly reduce the number of pests you may see inside over the winter and spring when they reemerge to head back outside.

They are great at sensing the temperature fluctuations being released around gaps and cracks in your home exterior, but they have a horrible sense of direction and can’t remember how they got inside. They use the same temperature sensing abilities when we turn on our interior heat sources or when natural sunlight warms the windows. They will leave their hiding spots and squeeze through ceiling or wall vents, around can light fixtures and even fireplaces or wood stoves that do not have a tight seal on the damper. That’s why you will often see them congregating around windows and doors. They feel the sunlight and think that is the way back outside.
