When that small project comes along that gives you an excuse to get out the old paraline bar, triangles and lead pointers... you're seeing several layers of tracing paper over a scaled drawing of an existing 1980's (and hideous) barrel vaulted entry at a home in Little Rock. Experimenting with a new classical entry with an English Regency covered entry.

This man, John Gaisford, and his wife Waneta and daughter Helen. The photo, probably taken in 1915 just before Waneta would succumb to sickness. He would design a number of prominent buildings in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi before dying in 1918, leaving poor Helen an orphan. Look forward to talking about him in Savannah, GA this week at the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.

Lakeport Plantation Museum is expert restoration. A project I was so proud to be a part of while working WER Architects. One of many highlights was the restoration of the original window in the gable of the pediment. Using traditional tools and a combination of dutchmen and , the indefatigable Ronnie Walker brought it back to life. Here are photos showing the process from start to finish. Enjoy!

Every once in a while I get the urge to write...

I was never a great student. I didn't have good study habits. I was a poor test taker and I struggled paying attention during class. I was a day-dreamer. But, I did put in the effort. I did care and I tried. That was enough for some teachers to give me a B or C grade. I was average in primary school...

This is the reconstructed 1823 William Woodruff Print Shop Historic Arkansas Museum . Probably the finest building in Little Rock, Arkansas at the time when most buildings were log or wood frame. It was the site of where Woodruff established the Arkansas Gazette--and was the first lending library in the territory. Mistakenly torn down in the 1940's, it was meticulously researched before its reconstruction in 2010. Note the shutters and doors. Back in the 1820's, blacksmiths would make "Rosehead" nails. Their length would be about 1" or so longer than the thickness of the final door or shutter, allowing the carpenter to drive the nail through layers of wood, then hit it on the backside to 'clinch' it back through--making them very stable. In these photos, including an actual 1820's shutter in Virginia, you can see it very clearly. Prior to installing the strap hinges, also made by hand from a skilled blacksmith, a leather washer would be placed behind the head of the nail, which prevented squeaking. For security on the frontier, oftentimes you'd see an "Indian bar" spanning across the interior side of the door. Before industrialization, the blacksmith was one of the most important (and busiest) people in a town.
