Barrier Free Elevators has begun elevator modernization work at the South Mall Towers in Albany.
We are currently underway on this modernization, bringing the existing elevator systems up to current performance and code standards. As with all our commercial modernization work, the goal is to minimize disruption to building operations while delivering a system that will perform reliably for decades to come.
What a Modernization Involves
A lot happens below the surface when we modernize an elevator. While riders may notice a smoother, quieter ride and updated cab finishes, the most significant changes are in the machine room and the controller cabinet:
New solid-state controls replace outdated relay-logic panels, improving reliability and diagnostics
Updated drive systems deliver smoother starts and stops and better energy efficiency
Wiring and safety devices are brought fully up to current NYS elevator code
ADA compliance is confirmed and addressed where needed

When a college elevator starts showing its age, it's not just an inconvenience - it's a liability. Aging components mean longer downtimes, harder-to-source parts, and increased risk of code compliance issues. That's exactly the situation Skidmore College faced, and Barrier Free Elevators was brought in to handle the modernization.
What We Did
Our team completed a full elevator modernization at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, bringing an older system up to today's standards in performance, reliability, and code compliance. Modernizations like this one replace the core mechanical and electrical components of an existing elevator — the controls, wiring, and operating systems — while keeping the existing shaft and structure in place.
The result is essentially a new elevator, at a fraction of the cost and disruption of a full replacement.
