Happy World Snake Day! Society needs to overcome the irrational fear most people have of snakes and learn to appreciate them as the fascinating creatures that they are. Snakes are a vital part of the local ecosystem and they don’t deserve the bad rap that they get. Just take it from these two!

Had to sneak away from last week’s baseball game real quick when my daughter came running to the dugout to tell me there was a turtle in the pavilion and she was afraid that it was lost or it might get hurt. Ran up to the pavilion to find this Eastern Box Turtle making its way across the wide open floor. We quickly moved it to a safer location in the general direction it was already heading. We wanted to make sure it was out of sight of any curious unattended children or dogs.

Most rat problems in our region come from the Norway Rat, an invasive species that arrived here on trade ships in the 18th century. Despite its name, it actually originates from Asia. The rat pictured was one of many removed from a large colony on a local customer’s property.

It’s turtle nesting season, here’s what you can do to help…. If you encounter a turtle that seems to be out of place, let it be. Females are on the move looking to lay eggs. They know what they’re doing. DO NOT pick the turtle up and bring it back to the water. If the turtle is in danger (in the middle of the road for example), move the turtle out of harms way, but allow her to continue to travel in the direction she was going.

This is insanity…. 50,000-70,000 pounds of hunter harvested venison is donated to food banks annually in New York State. I would venture to say that most of that venison was harvested using traditional lead ammunition. We’re not talking about selling this meat to restaurants (which is illegal by the way). We’re talking about feeding the homeless and hungry with this meat. This bill would destroy New York’s Hunters Helping the Hungry Program.

Take immediate action on a bills that directly affects our hunting traditions, wildlife management efforts, and the communities we generously help feed. Bill A10352 & S9473, which would prohibit the donation of game harvested with lead ammunition for human consumption. If passed, these bills would s...

Happy International Beaver Day from your friends at Putnam Valley Wildlife Services! Beavers are such a unique animal and are a vital species in our local ecosystems. Unfortunately, sometimes their ability to drastically change landscapes almost overnight can create serious problems. Beaver dams can cause roads to flood and sometimes even collapse. Beaver dams can also wash out train tracks and have even caused train derailments. If you’re having beaver problems, give us a call at (845)-603-2313 to discuss your options!

In 1890, 100 European Starlings were released in Central Park by Shakespeare lover Eugene Schieffelin. He released them because he wanted all birds mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays to be visible in the park. Fast forward over a 130 years later, and those original 100 birds in NYC have now grown to over 100 million, and their current population spans all the way out to Alaska and down to Mexico. This European Starling is currently making a nest in a soffit area of a local home. Hearing strange noises around your house and property? Give us a call and let us check it out for you!
