A persistent sewage smell around your home, septic tank, or drain field is worth paying attention to. Septic odors can have several causes, including a full tank, plumbing vent issues, damaged components, or problems within the drain field.

Instead of simply covering up the smell, pay attention to where and when you notice it. If the odor continues or is accompanied by slow drains, backups, or unusually wet areas outside, it may be time to have the system evaluated.

Catching potential septic concerns early can help protect your property and prevent a smaller issue from becoming a much larger problem.

Potter Excavating provides septic services and licensed Septic Transfer Title Inspections for residential and commercial properties.

Knowing what’s beneath your property isn’t just helpful. It can become extremely important when a problem occurs or you’re ready to make an improvement.

If you have a septic system, you should understand where the tank, drain field, and access points are located, as well as the system’s approximate age and maintenance history. Without this information, something as simple as planting a tree, installing a driveway, or planning a new structure could interfere with important areas of your septic system.

It also matters when problems arise. Having basic information about your system can make it easier to locate components, understand what may be happening, and determine the appropriate next steps.

Your septic system is a major part of how your property functions. Learning about it before you need that information can help you make smarter decisions and better protect your property for the future.

Adding a product to your septic system may sound like an easy way to keep everything working, but additives are not a replacement for proper septic care.

Your septic system still needs routine inspections and pumping when appropriate. Regular maintenance allows potential problems to be identified early and helps protect the tank, drain field, and overall system.

There is no shortcut when it comes to taking care of your septic system. Understanding its condition and staying on top of maintenance can help prevent unexpected problems and keep it functioning properly for years to come.

Before any excavation project begins, there are a few ground rules that can make all the difference. Know what is below the surface, understand the layout of the property, plan for proper access, and make sure the site is prepared for the work ahead.

Excavation isn't simply about digging. It's about understanding the land and making informed decisions before the equipment ever starts moving. Following the right ground rules helps create a safer, smoother project and a strong starting point for everything that follows.

Your septic system is designed to serve your property for many years, but like any important part of your home, it requires proper care. Everyday habits can have a significant impact on how well your system performs and how long it lasts.

Skipping routine inspections, flushing items that shouldn't enter the system, driving or parking over the drain field, planting large trees too close to the system, and ignoring warning signs such as slow drains or unpleasant odors can all place unnecessary stress on your septic system. Overloading the system with excessive water use can also reduce its efficiency over time.

Regular maintenance and early attention to small issues can help prevent larger problems in the future. Understanding how your septic system works and taking simple steps to protect it can extend its lifespan, improve its performance, and help you avoid costly repairs.
