For more than a century, Providence’s Jewelry District was at the heart of the city’s manufacturing economy and a nationally significant center of jewelry production. Rhode Island had become the leading jewelry-producing state in the country by the late 1800s, with hundreds of companies and thousands of workers concentrated in the district’s factories and workshops. The Jewelry District today continues to evolve, connecting Providence’s history of making and innovation with its future.
As a nod to that legacy, our upcoming multifamily project at 33 Bassett celebrates the art of making through both its architecture and its programming. A faceted metal-panel “bracelet” wraps the building’s primary retail frontage, recalling the jewelry (particularly bracelets and brooches) that was historically designed and produced throughout the district. Within the building, residential makerspace studios extend that legacy into the present, giving artists a place to live, create, and sell their work in the heart of downtown.
Today, the neighborhood’s historic industrial buildings remain as reminders of that legacy, while new residential, academic, research, and creative uses have brought renewed energy to the area. We wanted this special element to be at the public-facing entry of 33 Bassett, where residents, pedestrians, and the broader community can experience it. We hope you will, too!
