Meet the people behind Windmill Homes 👷

Rodney McNew is our owner and founder, the guy you'll see doing design consultations, and the reason our name is what it is. Rodney was raised by his grandfather, Silas McNew, a tinker from Quinton, VA. In the early 70s, Rodney and Silas built their first windmill together. As it turned, little carved characters came to life: a farmer churning butter, a squirrel in a rowboat. Rodney says it was like watching an aquarium, except it also came with great conversation and long afternoons on the porch.

That's where the name Windmill Homes comes from. It's named after Silas.

Rodney built his first home in New Kent in 1986, loved the process so much he incorporated Windmill Homes in 1992, and he's been building here ever since.

Today, his son Dylan McNew serves as Vice President and is on job sites often, hands-on with the work the same way his dad and great-grandfather were.

Same family, same care, over 30 years and counting. Follow along, this is only the first of the faces you'll get to know.

Know Rodney or Dylan from around town? Say hello in the comments.

Every good build starts with a good foundation. 🧱

Walk the site at Custis Millpond Rd in West Point and here's what you'd see: brick set along the whole foundation line, the frame up and squared, windows already in on both sides, and a porch just waiting on its railings. The roofline went up first, everything else is filling in around it.

This is the stage most people never get to see, just studs, house wrap, and a lot of measuring. But it's also the stage where every decision that matters gets made.

We'll keep sharing this one as it comes together. Follow along to watch it grow from framing to finished home.

Know someone building or renovating in West Point or nearby? Tag them below, they might want to watch this one too.

We appreciate D+D Studio, LLC for this information relating to starting major renovations or builds as it could not be any more accurate. The investment in your project starts before selecting a contractor or signing a contract.

The first step is investing in your vision with Alan so it can be accurately relayed to the contractor in the form of plans once you are ready to move to getting project bids. Without an accurate scope of work we can 't provide an accurate bid.

The #1 mistake we see Virginia homeowners make before starting a project:

Calling a contractor before they have drawings.

It's not the contractor's fault — they can't give you an accurate bid without knowing what they're building. So you end up with ballpark numbers that miss by $30k–$80k, and then scramble to figure out what to cut.

Here's the right order:

1️⃣ Hire a designer → get concept drawings
2️⃣ Use those drawings to get accurate contractor bids
3️⃣ Secure financing with a real number
4️⃣ Pull permits with your permit-ready drawing set
5️⃣ Break ground

This order protects your budget, your timeline, and your sanity.

We produce permit-ready residential drawings for Virginia homeowners. If you're in the planning phase, send us a message — we'll point you in the right direction.
