When a Crack Means Replacement

Sometimes the leak isn’t just a bad seal.

You can have a skimmer that looks fine from the outside, but once you start moving some dirt and looking closely, you find a crack hiding in the corner. And unfortunately, location matters. There are times when a skimmer can be temporarily patched, but when the crack is in a corner or along an angled section, a patch usually isn’t going to be a dependable long-term solution.

In this case, we’re dealing with an older skimmer, a cracked corner, and a faceplate that has already seen some questionable repairs. At that point, putting another temporary fix on top of an old problem doesn’t make much sense.

Sometimes the better repair is replacing the worn-out component with something newer and starting fresh.

Stopped by the City Hall Creamery & Coffee in Jordan for some ice cream on a hot day!

Such a fun place with tons of history and charm, plenty of fun classic flavors, and apparently absolutely NO understanding of what the word "small" means. This was their small "Rookie" cone!

GINORMOUS.

If that's the rookie size, I'm not sure I'm ready to go pro...

Before You Add Fish to Your Pond…

One of the easiest ways to introduce a problem into your pond is also one of the easiest things to overlook:

Adding new fish.

It can be tempting to grab a few inexpensive fish from a local pet store and put them right into your pond. They look healthy, they're affordable, and what's the harm?

The problem is that you can't always see what's going on beneath the surface.

New fish can carry parasites, diseases, or other health issues that aren't immediately obvious. Once those fish enter your pond, they can potentially expose the fish that you've spent years caring for.

I've seen pond owners lose fish they've had for a long time after introducing new fish into their ecosystem.

That's why I recommend being selective about where you buy your fish and, whenever possible, quarantining new arrivals before introducing them to your pond.

Now, that doesn't mean every fish from a pet store is unhealthy. But when you've invested time, money, and years of care into your pond, it's worth taking a few extra precautions.

Because sometimes the fish that seemed like a bargain can end up being the most expensive fish you've ever bought.

If you notice weaker water flow, strange pump sounds, a dropping water level, or a change in the spray pattern, don’t ignore it. Those small changes can be early warnings of a bigger issue.

A Brand-New Liner With an Old Problem

A brand-new liner shouldn't be leaking on day one, but unfortunately, that's exactly what happened here.

This homeowner had a landscaper completely redo their 20-year-old pond, including installing a new liner. The work was finished, but the pond has been leaking ever since. When the homeowner sent us pictures of the system, we were able to narrow down the problem before even stepping on site. Once we got there and took a closer look, the issue became pretty obvious.

The liner wasn't properly sealed around the skimmer, leaving gaps where water could escape around the edges instead of staying in the pond. And because this is a new liner, the frustrating part is that it now needs to be repaired.

It's a good reminder that installing a liner isn't just about putting the material in the hole. The details around skimmers, edges, plumbing, and transitions are what keep the water where it's supposed to be.

When those details aren't done correctly, you can end up with a brand-new pond that leaks from the moment it's finished.

Unfortunately, we're now here to fix something that shouldn't have needed fixing in the first place.

Sometimes the cheapest way to build something isn't the cheapest way to own it.
