Wild Lupine may be nearing the end of its bloom, but its beauty doesn’t have to stop here.

Those soft blue-purple flowers are one of spring’s prairie highlights, and sowing Wild Lupine seed this year is a simple way to bring that same magic to your own space for years to come.

Plant the seeds in fall/late winter, let nature do a little of the work, and look forward to future blooms that bring color, charm, and pollinator value back season after season.

Because when Lupine says goodbye for the year, it’s really just an invitation to plant more.

Wild Lupine seed is available online or at one of our Native Plant Centers.

Meet Carolina Puccoon!

If you caught yesterday’s prairie guessing game, this was the native plant emerging in our fields.

Carolina Puccoon is right at home in dry, sandy prairies, open woods, and woodland edges, making it a beautiful fit for tough, well-drained spots where many plants struggle. In Minnesota, it typically blooms from late spring into summer.

Beyond its sunny color, Carolina Puccoon supports early-season pollinators, including butterflies, skippers, and native bees. Its tubular yellow-orange flowers add an important burst of color while the spring prairie is still coming to life.

Fun fact: Carolina Puccoon belongs to the borage family, which includes familiar garden plants like forget-me-nots. Look closely, and you’ll notice its curled buds slowly unfurl as the flowers open.

With its fuzzy stems, curled buds, and bright yellow-orange blooms, Carolina Puccoon is bringing a welcome pop of sunshine to the prairie right now.

Have you ever spotted Carolina Puccoon blooming in the wild?

Some plants feel like a little spring surprise, and Jacob’s Ladder is one of them. 💙

Jacob’s Ladder "Polemonium reptans" is a lovely woodland native with clusters of soft blue, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in spring into early summer. It often grows in moist, shady woods and woodland edges, bringing a gentle pop of color right when the season feels new.

Its name comes from the plant’s ladder-like leaves, but its blooms are what usually steal the show. The soft blue flowers hover above fresh green foliage, making it a beautiful choice for shaded native gardens, woodland edges, and those tucked-away corners that could use a little spring charm. 🌿

Why it matters:
🐝 Offers nectar and pollen for early-season pollinators
🌳 Adds spring color to woodland native plant communities
🌱 Thrives in moist, shady or partly shady spaces
💙 Brings beauty to garden areas where sun-loving flowers may struggle

Fun fact:
Look closely at the leaves and you’ll see where the name comes from. The paired leaflets look like tiny steps climbing up the stem. 🪜

Now we have to ask: are you more charmed by the name, the leaves, or those soft blue blooms?

At Blue Thumb, we love sharing tools that make native planting more approachable and successful. 🌼✅ That’s why we’re excited to highlight our partner and sponsor Prairie Restorations, Inc. and their new online tool: PRESTO. ⚡

PRESTO helps take the guesswork out of choosing native plants. By combining site conditions with historical ecological data, the tool generates a tailored list of plants that are likely to thrive in your space, whether you’re starting your very first pollinator garden or planning a larger restoration project. 🌿🌻

Our latest blog post breaks down how PRESTO works and what inspired its creation. Read on at https://bluethumb.org/meet-presto-prairie-restorations-new-plant-finder-tool/

Thank you for being a Blue Thumb sponsor, Prairie Restorations! 💚

Not every featured plant has bold blooms, and False Melic Grass is a lovely reminder of that. 🌿

This graceful native grass can be found in open woods, shaded woodland edges, and conifer forests across much of Minnesota. It has a soft, airy look, with delicate arching seed heads that can take on a purplish tint as they mature.

False Melic Grass may not shout for attention, but that is part of its charm. It brings quiet movement, texture, and softness to woodland plantings and shaded native gardens, especially in places where showier flowers may not be the main attraction. 🌾

Why it matters:
🐦 Provides cover and habitat value for wildlife
🌱 Adds texture and diversity to woodland native plant communities
🌳 Grows well in shaded or partly shaded spaces
🍂 Helps bring a natural, layered look to woodland understory plantings

Fun fact:
Its delicate seed heads often turn purplish as they mature, which gives this understated grass a subtle little glow in the landscape. 💜

Have you noticed the beauty of false melic grass in a woodland setting yet? Share a picture! We'd love to see it! 👀
