Cabbages are out of the garden and in the big BIG crock. I should have harvested them sooner. I only ended up with 3 good ones left. That’s what gardening is about. Every year has its own personality. And you are always ALWAYS learning. No one knows how to do it perfectly. If you want to really get into gardening, make sure you take good notes. And you absolutely must be connected to the earth, paying attention to phenology. Read some Aldo Leopold. Read some books about the Great Depression. Find a book about Victory Gardens. It’s all those little things. But mostly, just be observant of what the earth is telling you.

A little potato harvest after work and before the rain. September is a rough and ugly garden month. I got a few things left to do. Then the BIG chore is clean up. It’s all worth it, especially since the cost of food in the store isn’t going to get any cheaper.

It’s never ending. I’m not complaining. At least we will have homegrown, safe to eat food on the shelf. Yesterday I did 50 pounds of tomatoes. From that I made a SPICY batch of salsa. Today I’m going to make some old fashioned spaghetti sauce, plain tomato sauce, salsa, and probably try some ketchup. All at Ferns & Vines LLC.
