As we wrap up August, here are a few things you may start noticing in your trees over the next month:

🍂 A little early leaf drop
After a long, hot Alabama summer, some trees may start shedding leaves early — especially if they've experienced drought stress.

🌳 Changes in the canopy
Late summer is a great time to notice thinning areas, dead branches or sections of the canopy that just don't look quite right. Once the leaves start falling, those clues can be harder to spot.

💧 Don't put the hose away just yet
September can still be HOT. Newly planted trees especially need to be monitored and watered when the soil is dry.

🐛 Keep an eye out for pests
Fall webworms and other late-summer insects may still be active. Not everything you see requires treatment, but knowing what you're looking at matters.

🌱 And the good stuff is coming...
We're getting closer to one of the BEST times to plant trees in Alabama! Cooler temperatures mean less stress on newly planted trees while their roots have time to establish.

September doesn't mean your trees are finished for the year — they're just getting ready for their next season. 🍂

Are you actually watering your trees… or just getting the ground wet? 🌳💧

During our hot Alabama summers, HOW you water your trees matters just as much as how often.

A few simple tips:
💧 Water early.
Morning is best. You'll lose less water to evaporation and give the soil time to absorb it before the heat of the day.

💧 Slow & deep is the goal.
Skip the quick spray with the garden hose. A slow trickle, soaker hose or watering bag allows water to soak deeper into the soil where the roots can actually use it.

💧 Don't water the trunk.
Tree roots spread OUT. Water the area underneath the canopy and around the drip line rather than spraying the trunk.

💧 Established trees don't need a little water every day.
Deep, periodic watering encourages a healthier root system than frequent shallow watering.

💧 Check before you water.
Dig down 6–9 inches. If the soil is still cool and moist, leave it alone. If it's dry, it's time to water.

🌱 Newly planted trees are different!
Their roots haven't had time to establish, so they'll need water much more frequently — especially through their first Alabama summer.

And remember: too much water can be just as damaging as not enough.

Don't water by the calendar. Check the soil, watch your tree and water where the roots are.

The new study is novel because it tracks how the tree canopy expands or contracts in response to development, natural disasters, and other forces, and how those changes in turn appear to correlate to communitywide health.

What are those big webs in the trees?

If you’ve noticed these around lately, you’re looking at fall webworms! 🐛

They build their webs around the leaves at the ends of branches and stay inside feeding on the foliage. As they grow, so does the web — which is why some of them can get HUGE.

The good news,they look a lot scarier than they usually are. A healthy, mature tree can typically handle the feeding without any long-term problems.

You’ll commonly see them in late summer and early fall, and pecans are one of their favorite trees.

So if you spot what looks like a giant spider web taking over part of your tree, now you know what’s actually living in there!
