As we move towards a more uncertain future, the need for resilience in our designs becomes increasingly important. It's not just about creating functional and aesthetically pleasing buildings, but also ensuring that they can withstand any challenges that may come their way.
Resilient design goes beyond just protecting against natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. It also means considering the effects of climate change, economic fluctuations, and social impacts on our built environment.
At , a multitude of strategies were discussed to help architects and designers create resilient structures. These included incorporating renewable energy sources, implementing sustainable materials, utilizing passive design principles, and integrating green spaces into urban areas for better air quality.
Here's where the profession is rising to meet the moment:
Risk as a starting point: Designing for Climate Risk: A Hands-On Charrette and Employing Climate Resilience Strategies to Design for Survival treated resilience as the brief, not the afterthought
Fire & flood: Designing Buildings & Neighborhoods for Wildfire Resilience and Flood Protection in Lower Manhattan turned hard-won lessons into repeatable playbooks
Smarter skins: Climate-Responsive Façades reimagined the building envelope as a living, breathing line of defense
Materials with muscle: MgO Structural Panels (fire + water resistance), Dowel-Laminated Timber (acoustics + health), and Carbon-Negative Building Products proved materials are strategic levers, not line items
Resilience is the new design excellence. Let's build it together.
