This 3-tab roof is past the point of patching.

You can see moss growing across the shingles, worn and mismatched tabs, and patched spots where shingles have already let go.

And that's only the top layer.

When we inspected it, we found **3 layers of asphalt shingles (possibly 4) sitting on top of an old wood shake roof**, all nailed over skip sheeting.

A repair on a roof like this just adds more weight to a system that's already worn out.

Here's what replacing it means:
βœ”οΈ Tearing off every layer, all the way down to the rafters
βœ”οΈ Putting new 7/16" OSB decking over the whole roof
βœ”οΈ Ice & water shield at the eaves, in the valleys, and around every pe*******on
βœ”οΈ New flashing everywhere, including the chimney
βœ”οΈ Permits and inspections, all handled by us

If your 3-tab roof looks like this, you're not due for a new roof. You're overdue.

Bad weather doesn't wait for your roof. β›ˆοΈ

Here's what we found on a roof inspection this week:

πŸ”Ή Cracked, brittle shingles that split right open by hand
πŸ”Ή Patchwork repairs with mismatched shingles
πŸ”Ή Worn-out flashing and debris built up around a vent pipe
πŸ”Ή Moss and lichen holding moisture against the roof

From the street, this roof looks "fine." Up close, it's one snowstorm away from a leak.

Winter is coming fast in North Idaho and Spokane. Now is the time to find these problems, not after water is coming through your ceiling.

Pine needles and leaves look harmless, but they trap moisture against your roof and siding.

On this Post Falls home, debris packed into the valleys and against the wall, plus improper flashing, rotted out the fascia and siding trim. It's now set for a full roof replacement.

Clear your valleys and gutters every fall. Your wood will thank you.

Lifetime workmanship warranty on every roof.

Seeing little black spots on the underside of your roof deck? πŸ‘€

Those are called "cat's eyes" β€” and they're an early warning sign.

Rustin was up in Athol this week inspecting an attic and found a bunch of them right where the roofing nails come through. Here's what's happening: water is getting past the shingles and following the fasteners (nails, staples, sometimes screws) down into the wood. Each time it does, it leaves a small dark ring around the nail.

It's a minor leak today. Left alone, it turns into rotted decking, mold, and a much bigger bill.

Next time you're in the attic, grab a flashlight and look up. If you see dark spots around the nails, it's time to get your roof checked.

That green moss on your roof might look harmless, but it's slowly prying your shingles apart. 🌲

Here's what it's doing up there:

πŸ”Ί **Lifting your shingles.** Moss roots wedge under shingle edges, curling them up and breaking the seals that keep wind and rain out.

πŸ’§ **Letting water in.** Once those seals break, rain gets pushed under the shingles and into your underlayment and roof deck. That's where leaks start.

πŸͺ¨ **Stripping granules.** Moss holds moisture against your roof all season. That wears off the protective granules and leaves bare asphalt cooking in the sun.

πŸͺ΅ **Rotting the wood.** Trapped moisture leads to hidden rot in your decking and rafters, and you usually don't see it until it's a big repair.

πŸ“‰ **Cutting your roof's life short.** Heavy moss can mean replacing your roof years early, and it can even void your manufacturer warranty.

πŸ”₯ **Becoming fuel in fire season.** In our dry Inland Northwest summers, moss dries out completely and turns into kindling sitting on top of your house.

Fall rain is when moss takes off. Catch it now, before winter.

Beautiful country house in Post Falls.

Great home. Rough roof.

Most of it had two layers of shingles.

That's a shortcut someone took years ago.

And the homeowner pays for it now.

Tear-off takes longer.

Moisture gets trapped under the decking.

Rotted sheathing has to come out.

More sheathing means more cost.

Doing it right the first time is cheaper.

One layer. Clean deck. Done right.

Thinking about a new roof?

Ask us what's under your shingles.

Free inspections. Lifetime workmanship warranty.
