While in Vicenza this spring, Ben has been visiting the work of Andrea Palladio with his students.

What continues to inspire us is the clarity of Palladio’s architecture. His buildings are geometrically precise and highly legible, standing as distinct objects while also bringing order and character to the spaces around them.

From the Basilica Palladiana and the Loggia del Capitaniato to Villa Forni Cerato, these works remain powerful lessons in how architecture can shape both a building and its surroundings, nearly 500 years after they were built.

A new multifamily project is underway on the Oregon coast. Dense fir, coastal scrub, and glimpses of the Pacific set the tone for what's ahead. More to come!

We're thrilled to announce that Dune House has been selected as the Jury Winner in the Private House (S 1,000–2,000 sq ft) category at the 14th Annual Architizer A+ Awards.

Located along the northern Oregon Coast, the Dune House balances contextual sensitivity to the local landscape and its building traditions with the creation of a timeless, iconic form. Cedar shingles, oak flooring and paneling, and a skylit interior courtyard give the house a calm, carved presence, framing views of the coastal dunes for rest and contemplation.

The Architizer A+ Awards focuses on promoting and celebrating the year's best architecture with their global audience of 400+ million.

Thank you to the judges: Carlo Ratti , Nicole Hollis , Ma Yansong , Koichi Takada , Andrés Jaque , and Jerome Byron@officeofbc , as well as luminaries from beyond architecture including .carson (Museum of Modern Art), Lisa Demetrios ( ), and Miles Smith .

Midreview week at the UO studio in Vicenza, Italy

Students are designing a museum on the eastern edge of the Piazza dei Signori, right next to one of Palladio's most celebrated buildings. The work takes that adjacency seriously: questions of threshold, civic scale, and what it means to build beside a masterwork.

Grateful to the reviewers who gave their time and insight for the midreview:

Kim Williams, Founder, Kim Williams Books
Cosimo Monteleone, Associate Professor, University of Padova
Don Corner, Professor of Architecture,
Jenny Young, Professor,
Paola Vighy, Architect,
Giovanni Traverso, Principal Architect,

Last slide shows the entry threshold to the school. More to come on thresholds and entries in coming weeks!

As part of our research for the 2024 USDA Forest Service Wood Innovation Grant, we developed three typologies addressing diverse uses and site conditions. The Civic/Assembly Typology employs tilt-up CLT panels, open trusses, and external buttresses to create flexible spaces for public events, performances, and exhibitions, as well as adaptable industrial or technology uses, while emphasizing the material and sensory qualities of mass timber.

Piazza dei Signori, Vicenza -- From morning markets to evening aperitivo, this piazza is never the same twice, yet always alive. A true urban living room, purposefully designed to accommodate the rhythms of daily life: commerce, celebration, rest, and community.

Ben and his students are studying the eastern edge of the piazza as the site for the studio this spring, learning what it means to design for people. Spaces that don't prescribe a single use, but instead invite countless possibilities.

This spring, Ben is back in Italy teaching with the University of Oregon's School of Architecture and Environment in Vicenza. A Material and Detail seminar and a Mass Timber Studio exploring CLT and the experiential qualities of space. The semester opened with two weeks across Italy, letting buildings do what buildings do best, teach through presence. Including a stop at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, one of Renzo Piano's buildings. Ben spent time early in his career at Piano's workshop, making Italy feel like familiar ground.
More coming over the next few weeks!

Construction is underway at The Malarkey, coming to downtown Portland this summer, the latest venture from celebrated chef .

The 10,000 SF space sat vacant for nearly a decade. WA team worked on the permitting, programming, and architectural organization, creating a framework flexible enough for each room to have its own character. Interior design and FF&E by the talented , with building it all out.

Rebuilt on the footprint of the original Tippy Canoe along the historic Columbia River Highway, Roadhouse honors the spirit of the classic roadhouse while reimagining it through mass timber. A field of CLT fins unifies indoor and outdoor seating, frames the porch, and draws the eye toward the Sandy River beyond.
