1) Choose the right base. Most people are drawn to the style of a paver. There are many color, texture and size options to choose from. For the first tip it is to choose a style of base that compliments the pavers and vise versa. Permeable pavers need permeable base, driveway rated pavers need a deeper base for vehicular traffic etc. and larger slab pavers will need a standard depth base as they are not rated for vehicles. know what your paver is designed to handle and choose a base that supports them is up to the task.
2) water. Most paver patios have about a 1.5% slope. But sometimes that slope is interrupted by other outdoor features. Be sure to add weep holes or auxiliary drainage infrastructure if that slope is interrupted by a seat wall, bar or counter, etc. Water can pool in those areas without proper planning
3) jointing! For most pavers a standard polymeric sand is a good choice for joints. It has a natural sand look and usually lasts 3-5 years without much maintenance. Permeable pavers need chip stone joints or a wet applied resin bound sands that allow water to pass through.
